Are We Under God?

WEST SIDE'S BUMP FOR THE MONTH -July 2002

What is our society coming to?
Is this not the question that so many people particularly south of the 49th are asking since that court's ruling shot down the pledge?
The cries are coming from everywhere concerning how secular our society really is becoming (or is it has become?)!
What do we the people of God feel (or fear) from such a turn of events?
NOTHING!

The fact of the matter is that whether governments or nations of people state it or not, believers in the Almighty know that we are all under God!
While this may be a sign that society is moving farther and farther away from recognizing the Creator, when in the Christian age has a society or people ever been considered the faithful people of God except the church? (1 Peter 2:9,10)

I am not trying to say that it is wrong for a Country in it's constitution to include the Creator and I applaud all peoples & politicians who speak up in defense of faith in God, but let us not forget that Jesus never said his kingdom was to be of this world (John 18:36) but he did say that the church was always going to be distinct from & at times opposed by the world. (Matthew 10:21,22)

Perhaps Christians instead of just bemoaning the downfall of society should actually be looking to see how a move like this by the world could help the church in her mission on earth!
Perhaps it's a wake-up call for her to be the salt of the earth & light set on a hill?
Perhaps it's a time to re-invest in the need to tell the story in convincing ways concerning our Creator & His marvelous plan to win men back to Him?
Perhaps it's a time to give thanks again for living in a nation where, although becoming more secular in general, it is still okay to meet on a street corner and sing the praises of Him & speak His wonderful message every week?

What do I personally think about the pledge?
As a believer I think it's wonderful and it helps people have a consciousness of God and I hope it does stay. But, the job of bringing God to the world was never the world's to begin with, but the church's. Above everything, we all know that simply saying you're under God isn't what is important anyway. Its lives that produce evidence of the rule of God.
