Dealing with Davinci
West Side Church of Christ
Wednesdays June 28- August 2, 2006
What is all the fuss about over this book, now movie?
FACT:
If Davinci Code’s Claims are True…
- Jesus Christ never claimed to be and really could never be the Son of God
- Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had a child with her who was heir to Israel’s throne
- Jesus wanted Magdalene, not Peter, to lead his church
- The 4 gospels which serve as a solid foundation for the Christians faith are simply
fabrications to seal a masculine power grab for history
FACT:
1/3 of Canadians who have read the book believe there are descendants of Jesus walking
among us today
53% of Americans who have read the book claim it has been helpful in their ‘personal
spiritual growth’.
How could we (should we) react to this?
Should we shun the material and everyone who might be paying attention to it?
Why are people paying attention to it in the first place?
Are they on to something that our faith can’t handle?
Is everyone who is reading the book part of a great conspiracy of unbelief to destroy the faith
of Christians?
Or, is there some evidence that many people, thousands if not millions are seeking for something
spiritual?
Not everything about the Davinci Code phenomenon is bad. There are many good discussions
to have concerning faith. Christians who will be successful in their engaging of others will be
very intentional about their approach, sensitive with their words and knowledgeable about the
topic.
It is my prayer that this series will help us on this road. We need not fear a discussion
of faith and truth, nor do we need to come down hard on friends and family members who decide
to look at the claims of the book. We do need to be ready to have a dialogue in a Jesus-like
manner with all those who long to ‘see Jesus’ (John 12:21)
