The Blessing of His Coming #3

Text: John 14:1-27

Again, it is good to be together praising the God of all creation and remembering the Saviour Jesus Christ. It was said so long ago through the prophet Isaiah that "unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end." (Isaiah 9:6,7a.)
I really like that last part and it's something that we should be thinking about at this current time in our world, of his peace there shall be no end!
As was true of the year 1000 it is true of the year 2000 that many people in the world are anxious of what might be and we forget what our Jesus is all about: of his peace there shall be no end.
There are basically two things Jesus wants of us:
to become one of his special people and then once we are, know his peace!
I once had a conversation with a lady who was not trying to do this but actually summed up many people's view of Christ's presence.
Basically, they believe that life is better the way it is!
She told me that she didn't want heaven to be any different than her life on earth!
Now, if you don't have Jesus Christ, its true that life is better now than it will be, but if you have Jesus Christ as your Saviour, his appearance will just be a further establishing of his beautiful peace!

We've been looking the past couple of weeks at the blessing of his coming! The Old Testament faithful looked forward to his coming as a time of great things. Yet, they also saw that when the Messiah actually did come, it would be different than most kings who are about to be crowned, Jesus would be crowned through suffering, death and then triumph over it!
Then, last week we looked at his coming through the eyes of the early New Testament characters and saw especially through Mary how the Messiah's appearing meant change! Change in a positive way that the hopeless would have hope and so on!
Well, how should we view his coming?
Is it a blessing?
How blessed are we?
Again, what would life be like if there were no Jesus?
Imagine no recollection of "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." Or "if any man thirst let him come unto me and drink." Or where would the underdog go for real support if he never heard the words "whoever is without sin let him cast the first stone."
How different life would be if there was no Jesus!

What would our future look like?
What hope could we give to those who suffer?
What comfort to those who sorrow?
This is hard to believe but I would be at a loss for words if there were no Jesus!
What do we feel about it?
Turn to John 14 beginning at verse 1 please…
I'm going to go against the grain as far as traditional Christmas time sermons go. I think we covered it last week. But, in this time of year when so many people are focusing on Jesus Christ, it's important that we focus on what his coming to us actually means!
When the angels broke out into sweet music and sang the ultimate praises of God, when the wise men brought gifts and offering and when Joseph probably brought forth the new born son, what was going on?
How did it change the world?
How did it change our world?
The important thing to remember is as we have gathered and remembered the death of Jesus, without a birth there could not be a death!
Without a death there could not be a resurrection!
Without a resurrection there could not have been an ascension!
Without an ascension there could not be a return!
With all these events in mind, how should we view his coming?
Vs.1-4- I want us to just take note of a few phrases:
Do not let your heart be troubled! He says it again in verse 27!
Jesus came to bring us peace! He did not come to cause confusion; he didn't come to instill fear in our hearts. He didn't come to cause us to have a question mark behind our salvation! He came to untrouble our broken hearts! Why?
He says trust me that I'm coming again!
As sure as his coming in the manger was, Jesus shall come in the skies again! So what?
That thought doesn't bring me peace you say! It should!
"We might be together"! He came to be with us, so we might go and be with Him!
What if he had never come?
What peace could you have about the unknown valley?
There will be peace in the valley for those who belong to Jesus!
Vs.9-11- if you see me you see the Father!
He showed a world that was confused what God was really like! We have the peace of God because we have been shown that God is peaceful! How better it is to see God through the life of Jesus!
What would our view of Him be if Jesus had never come!
John 1:1,2- Emmanuel!
Vs.18-20- I will not leave you comfortless!
Jesus would not leave us destitute, in trouble, in chaos, in sorrow why? I will come to you! 2 Thess.2:16,17
Vs.23- if you follow him, he has promised that he will come to you!
The true blessing of Jesus coming to this earth is not seen in the general coming, but in the fact that each and every individual who decides to follow Him, will have Him as His constant companion through all the trials of life and more!
What if he had never come?
What if he had chosen to stay in heaven?
What if he had decided that he would come but then not die?
How blessed are we that Jesus came to earth?
Col.3:4 when Christ who is our life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Remember, my peace I leave with you…
