The Great Three in One

Text: John 15:25-27

As we walk through this world as children of God, we many times love to dream about Him and all that He is!
The subject of the godhead is a very much-debated subject. It throws many people into searches that are not really profitable for their walk with Him. One thing we need to always remember about the Divine is Romans 11:33.
There are some things that are beyond our understanding in this world!
Nonetheless there are some things that God wants us to know about Him in our lives.

I want us to look at the question of the godhead or trinity and then see some thing's about our God.
The first question that we need to try to answer is the question of whether or not God is One Being or Three!
Turn to Deut.6:4- Hear o Israel the Lord our God is One God!
Now 1 Cor.8:4-6- we know there is One God, the Father!
From these two passages with a few others, it would seem that the number One definitely stands out when we're talking about the Nature of God!
There is but One God!
One thing to remember here though is the context of each of these statements. They are comparing the true God with idols!
There is only One God to worship or serve!
Turn to Genesis 1:26- God said let us make man in our own image!
Who was he talking to?
Col.1:16,17! One of the others was Jesus. When we say God created the earth we are correct and when we say Jesus created the earth we are correct.
Gen.1:2- the Spirit of God was also before creation.
So far, what we have got is that there was only One God to serve but there was a plurality always in heaven!
John 1:1-3 - the godhead involves more than one Being!
When you read the Bible you recognize that there is but one Divine Nature but three distinct beings possess it!
There is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Now someone says well they are all the same Being. Turn to Acts 10:38- here it is clear that all Three are indeed different and yet united!
The Father the anointer, the Son the anointed, and the Spirit the anointing.
Matt.3:16,17- the Father speaking, the Son baptized and the Spirit descending.
John 15:25-27- God the Father the source, God the Son the sender, God the Spirit the sent!

Many other passages could be produced that show Three distinct beings in the Godhead and yet they're still One God! One Divine Nature or Source!

Having said that, what does this knowledge do for the Christian?
Well, one must always remember that all Three are One, they share in the same goal, pursuits, wishes etc.
They were one in creation, and they continue to be one throughout eternity.
Notice, all three indwell in the Christian!
John 14:23- the Father and the Son will abide in the one who obeys Jesus! Acts 5:32- the Spirit does as well!
All three are connected to the truth!
John 14:6- Jesus is the truth. John 14:17- the Spirit of truth. John 17:17- the Father's word was truth.

Why I brought this up was to get it into our minds that all three are working in the Christians life, all three are working together in the Christians life and not one of the three will ever work contrary to the other two!

This brings me to a very special verse in the Bible, one that maybe is not paid to much attention to, because it is simply a farewell verse.
2 Cor.13:14- "the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen."
The great Three in One. We may never understand everything about God's work, Christ's work or the Spirit's work and I firmly believe we won't on this earth. But there are things we can understand about them. All three do different things, but all three work together for the accomplishment of the will of God, including the will of God in our lives!
  1. The love of God! John 3:16, 1 John 4:16.
This is the love that brings salvation to man, that sanctifies the soul and pardons sin. This is the love that sacrifices. Romans 8:32. This is the active good that will save us. Romans 5:8. God's love is to be with us, to remind us of all that was done for us on our behalf. It is to guard us from the doubts of the Devil and bring us into security with Him.
  2. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ! 2 Cor.8:9.
This is the grace that accomplished for us what we by ourselves could not. This is the One who showed us grace in its fullness. The best definition of grace is this verse. He who was rich became poor so we who were poor could become rich. This is the grace that saves and pardons. It is the grace that lifts up the weary soul and makes the sinsick whole! Eph.2:5- for by grace you have been saved!
  3. The fellowship of the Holy Spirit! Phil.2:1.
This is the fellowship that comes from being One of God's. Eph.1:13. This is not the miraculous outpouring of gifts but it could very well include the fellowship in the fruit with which the Spirit leads us into. Gal.5:22. This fellowship also brings us into greater fellowship as the family of God. It is the Spirit's unity that makes us one under God. Eph.4:3. This fellowship is to be with us to help us remember who we are joined with in this heavenly journey. We are joined with each other, but we are also joined with God. 1 John 1:3 - no mention of the Spirit, but still fellowship with the Divine.
The great 3 in 1. As children of God we have The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit all working on our behalf.
We have God's great love watching out for us, the Son's grace lifting us, and the Spirit's fellowship to encourage us.
Turn to Eph.2:20-22 - all Three are working as One to finish Their work in us.
There is one other area they all work together. Matthew 28:19!
