Who Can Find A Greater Blessing
Text: Proverbs 31:21-28
What a thrill today to be here and singing the praises of God.
It is nice to see so many children today as this is a special day in
which all children everywhere have the opportunity to give honour to
whom honour is indeed due: their mothers!
A great majority of us who have come to know Jesus and to know His love
were first introduced to Him through our mothers.
So, this morning I decided to entitle the lesson with a question, who
can find a greater blessing?
With respect to growing up with a mother who devotes her love to her
little ones I wonder if there is a blessing that is greater?
Of course this question is adapted from the great portion of scripture
found in Proverbs 31:10-31 where King Lemuel recites interestingly
enough some words that his mother taught him!
To grow up in a home with a woman who has a reverence for all
things godly is the greatest advantage that one can have in this life.
Many people who have come to saving faith in Jesus Christ owe it to
their mothers. There was one lady in Sudbury whose husband died in the
mines when she was approximately 27,28 years of age. She had two young
boys probably between the ages of 2-7. This lady through strong faith
and dedication to Jesus could be found at every church service in the
second pew with these two young boys who were fatherless.
Today, the oldest just graduated from Freed-Hardeman University a
minister of the gospel and the other is a very talented song leader.
What a blessing that these young boys, who through difficult
circumstances were put at a disadvantage, had a mother who loved them
enough to love God!
I just want to look very briefly at the great blessing godly
mothers are to the world and why we as the church of the Lord honour
all you mothers and thank you for you sacrificial service in performing
the greatest job of all time.
- Mother's are a great blessing because of their commitment!
Rarely is there anybody in the world who will be committed to you as
your mother. A mother is someone, who will always welcome you home,
will always feel your pain and when necessary correct you with those
arms or sometimes the backs of the hands of love.
Why?
They are committed to you.
Paul told Titus in chapter 2:5 that the older women were to teach the
younger women to be keepers of their home.
We thank you for this.
Paul Faulkner told the story how men and women could be compared to
home life. It's like spinning plates. Mothers have to keep about 25
plates spinning at a time and they don't bother taking note of their
success. The Father on the other hand keeps one but it goes really
good and the mother tells him how good it is.
Mothers we thank you for your commitment to us. We Fathers thank you
as well.
The Proverb writer put it this way in chapter 31:15.
Not only is their commitment to the kids worth honouring but Godly
mothers who insist on committing their household to God are getting
their kids future on the right tracks.
Hannah's example in 1 Samuel 1:11.
Here is this woman who because of
her decision to commit her son to God gave Israel one of the greatest
men who ever lived. 1 Samuel 1:27,28.
- Mother's are a great blessing because of their instruction &
example.
Many today can recount watching their mothers study the Bible or
perform deeds of kindness. Mothers words have a way of at times
seeming to be like fingernails on the chalkboard but in reality seem to
get etched into our minds and guide our paths.
Nothing can guarantee our children's future but the living testimony of
a godly mother and the words of instruction can only help.
The example of Lois and Eunice helped change the world in 2
Timothy 1:5.
In fact in the church, women are needed impress others by their lives
and not by their apparel. 2 Timothy 2:9,10.
Many children can echo this short story about a child who was getting
in his mother's way all day on a very busy day. Finally, she asked if
he would like to go outside and play on the swing set when he replied,
I would rather be in here with you mommy. Finally exasperated she
asked what he was doing, "The Sunday school teacher said to walk in
Jesus' footsteps but I can't see him, so I'm walking in yours."
How wonderful when those footsteps do indeed mirror the Master's
closely.
- Mother's are a great blessing because of their undying love.
Its amazing in the Bible that when the Bible compares something of God
to man, the intent is not to make the thing of man seem nothing, but
rather to show us how great the thing of God is.
In fact, the thing that is compared actually becomes honoured through
it.
Example of Matthew 17- transfiguration- Jesus - Moses, Elijah!
Who knows your blood type?
Who knows your first word?
Who knows when you received your first tooth?
Who knows when things just aren't right?
Who knows your favourite food?
Who knows your favourite sport?
Who knows when you're probably not being 100% truthful?
Who knows when you need a hug, a kick or a swat?
Who knows what you are allergic to?
Who knows how to hold you when you are a baby?
Who knows how to speak to you?
Who knows how to help you in your homework?
It's your mom!
Why? Isaiah 49:14-17.
Now, there have been cases where some women have loved themselves more
than their children.
We feel for those children. But, shall a mother forget her nursing
child?
Again, Paul told Titus that the aged women are to teach the younger
women to love their children, but when a mother does love her kids,
who can find a greater blessing?
And it is because of that undying love that millions will stand on
judgment day and as they enter into the heavenly home singing praises
to God, they will whisper a thank you to the woman who raised them to
have a reverence for all things godly!
That Proverb ends very beautifully read with me Proverbs 31:28,30,31.
3 invaluable traits of godly mothers for which the church of Jesus
Christ honours you mothers and says thank you for guiding the children
that God has given you in the direction of saving faith.
May all mothers see the importance of committing their households to
knowing God, influencing their precious ones through instruction and
example and loving them as the Father in heaven loves us all.
