Dan's resume
has been updated but this CV is in need of some serious expansion
Most of the work that he did in 1997-2000 is not included.
Daniel Herman Weiskotten. Born Cazenovia,
NY, 2/12/1960. I received my MA (Archaeology and Public History,
with focus on Northeast Woodlands/Iroquois and Museum Management) from
SUNY at Albany in 1997, BA (Anthropology) from SUNY at Albany in 1991,
and AA (Natural Resources Conservation/Journalism) from SUNY Morrisville
in 1988. I have been active in cultural resource management since 1985
and have conducted extensive historical research projects in many areas
of New York, Maryland, and Vermont. Professional positions held include
Project Director at the Public Archaeology
Facility from 1995 to 1998, and research and field positions with other
Cultural Resource Survey firms in New York and Maryland. In 1989 and 1990
I was an Intern at the New York State Museum, Office of History Survey,
and in 1991 and 1992 was a Crew Director at Dr. David Starbuck's field
schools at the French and Indian War encampment at Fort Edward, NY and
the Revolutionary War fortifications at Mount
Independence at Orwell, VT. For the Public Archaeology Facility
I was a Project Director and conducted historical research for numerous
projects including Site Examinations
at an Archaic site in Otsego County, a Late Woodland Iroquois site in Tompkins
County, rural farmsteads in Broome, Chenango, and Ontario counties, and
19th century industrial sites in Onondaga, Oswego, and Monroe counties.
I have authored various other projects under PAF's state-wide highway subcontract
with the New York State Museum and NYSDOT, and for private contracts. From
1983 to 1989 I was the appointed Municipal Historian for the Town of
Cazenovia, Madison County, NY, and
I still
conduct in-depth research on the history of this beautiful community.
While still in NY I was an active member of the Beauchamp
and Chenango Chapters
of the New York State
Archaeological Association, Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, a member of the Mount
Independence Coalition, and a corresponding member of the New York
Archaeological Council. Since my recent move to Richmond, VA, I have
become an Associate Member of the Council
of Virginia Archaeologists, am a volunteer at the Valentine
Museum. Presently I am undertaking several studies of my own
initiative including 19th
century book publishers of Cazenovia, NY, 19th century population,
health, and mortality demographics; rural
cemeteries and burial
patterns; cabinet makers; historical
geography and land use patterns; and tombstone
carvers of southern Central New York 1800-1850. Many of my compiled
works and research papers involve my home town of Cazenovia, NY, and are
available on-line on my history
web pages.
