The Tongue has been specially modified to provide a safe, fun, and unique experience at Burningman. The base vehicle was reduced to the frame and drive components, and a welded expanded-steel superstructure added that is in the shape of a tongue. Closed cell foam was added over this for padding, and finally the red carpeting seen in the photo. The Driver sits at the rear, where all of the controls have been re-located to. This Art car can comfortably handle 6-8 persons riding on the deck (including the Driver). This Art Car has a 4 year history at Burningman (between two Owners), and is looking forward to coming back after a year off in 2006. This year the engine and cooling system have been refurbished, and the wiring redone to simplify operation. New carpeting and lighting will also be added. In addition, carbon offsets have been purchased to cover the impact of transporting this vehicle each way and using it at Black Rock City in 2007 (150 gallons of fuel burned, multiplied by 10x to cover initial vehicle production, for a total of 5 tons of carbon offsets purchased).

The steering is accomplished using a whip-staff attached to a crank. This allows the Driver to do  very precise maneuvering in a variety of seated positions. This also allows for easy "disabling" of the vehicle by removing the Driving Staff.

The Brakes have been re-routed to the rocker panel in the middle left of this photo. Acceleration is handled by the metal tubing (the one casting the shadow). The automatic tranny has been re-routed to the red linkage in the top right of the photo.
