Following the success of the youth team’s visit to New Zealand earlier this year, WSTTA will be sending a team of junior players to participate in the New Zealand Open Championship at Christchurch, New Zealand from 30 September 2000 to 7 October 2000. This tournament is the biggest table tennis tournament in New Zealand and it is to be held at the new Canterbury Table Tennis Stadium in Christchurch, one of the biggest table tennis stadium in New Zealand. Players of all ages from the Oceania region will take part in it.
WSTTA’s junior team will consist of the current Oceania and Australian junior champion, John Tawadrous together with promising young juniors, Andrew Chak and Michael Xia. They will represent WSTTA in the junior team event and will also participate in the individual events.
Team captain and manager, Tony Lee says that this tour was made possible because of the sponsorship from WSTTA for the air tickets. He hopes that WSTTA’s young junior members will gain some valuable international playing experience as well as developing new friendships with juniors players from New Zealand. As part of the WSTTA’s junior development program, it is also hoped that this tournament will remain on WSTTA’s calendar and become a regular event for the club in the future.
