Ace Home Loans Table Tennis Open Championship - Report

Mens Singles Final

The Ace Home Loans Table Tennis Open Championship 2001, organised by Wah Sing Table Tennis Academy and sponsored by Ace Home Loans, concluded on 7th October. The championship consisted of the mens and womens open singles divisions. The early rounds were sparked off on 6th Oct at Fort Street High School, Petersham. It began with group round-robins, followed by knockout contests amongst the group qualifiers. The semi-finals and finals of the tournament were then played on 7th October at MarketCity in Chinatown. The total prize money for this championship was worth up to $3500. Also, the International Table Tennis Federation new 11 point game rule was introduced to the tournament (best of 5 in the earlier rounds, best of 7 in the semi-finals and finals), adding more excitement to the already thrilling game of table tennis. Womens Singles Final

Along with the best Australian table tennis players, there were players from China, Italy and Switzerland entering the tournament. After rounds of exhilarating games of table tennis contests, the mens singles semi-finalists consisted of Queensland champion - Brett Clarke, current NSW champion - Kiet Tran, Oceania Junior & Youth champion - John Tawadrous, and former Australian champion - Paul Pinkewich. The womens singles final was a contest between Miao Miao, current Australian champion and Stella Zha, who came from Sichuan, China just six months ago and was a Sichuan province champion. Each player mustered all their best quality of skills and techniques, with electrifying and incredible shots rallied throughout the matches. The thrill of the games and the superb quality of table tennis on display received numerous rounds of applause and cheer from the onlookers, which filled the whole shopping centre. In between matches, table tennis exhibition was organised between the former Australian champions Katherine Ying Kwok and Gina Hui to spice up the day.

After the conclusion of the mens and womens singles finals, the awards were presented to the winners by Mr. Jeremy Yuen of Ace Home Loans, WSTTA Honorary Life President Mr King Fong, WSTTA President Mr. Johnny Zhou and various other guests.
