Table Tennis The newly formed Boys' and Girls' Table Tennis team started the year in splendid style, winning the Area Knockout Competition in brilliant fashion. Consisting of Vivian Yung (11A), Andrew Chak (8T), Yao Song (11K), Peter Chong (12K), Simon Collins (12L), Tony Tsai (11A) and Daniel Lin (10T), the team has shown great enthusiasm during training sessions and matches. The first match in the CHS competition was against Penrith High School in Round 3, after a first round bye, and forfeiture from Blacktown Boys High School in Round 2. Despite the long journey, the team spirit was high and they played superbly in all games, with a remarkable 21-4 win to Simon Collins in one set. The Ruse team was able to keep their opponenets to score under 10 in most sets, for a final match score of 5-0 (best of 7). The team met Castle Hill High School in Round 4. Players 1 and 2, Vivian Yung and Andrew Chak, were able to lead the team by winning their own singles games early in the match. Following on were some very tight games, seeing an exciting 24-22, 24-22 win to Tony Tsai, and a tactical two sets to one win to Peter Chong. The Ruse team then played two doubles games with Castle Hill and won both of them, for a perfect win, 6-0. In the Area Final, the team was up against last year's winner, Bidwill High School. The match was played in Bidwill High School hall, with a large number of staff and parents from Bidwill as spectators. The team started well with Vivian Yung and Andrew Chak winning their own singles games. The third and fourth games were quite tough. Yao Song played against a tenacious adversary and won in two close sets. In the fourth games, players from both teams fought tooth and nail. A third set was needed to determine the outcome of the game. The determined Bidwill player played some exceptional shots in the diciding set, which earned a point for Bidwill. The Ruse team finished the match by winning the remaining three doubles games, for a 6-1 win. Being the winner of the Area Final, the team will move on to the State Final Rounds. The first opponent the team will face is the winner of the Western Area. These matches will be played on 25th June at Homebush State Sports Centre. Special thanks should go to Mr. Lees, and all the parents for the time and enormous efforts they put in to assisting the team.
