FIRST OFF, FOR ALL FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW, CAN YOU TELL A TALE OF THE CREATION OF SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS?

The madness started in June '97, when schizoid pedophobe Butch met maniac corpse eater Dmitry (IMPURITY member). The first one was looking for a band to express his own sick ideas and the second - for the musicians for a new project. Dmity leaves IMPURITY followed by the second guitar player Denis. All the other members of IMPURITY cannot outlive the shame and commit suicide. The new project gets the name FOETAL CARNAGE. The band invites guest musicians for the recording of the first demo - these are Vasily on bass and Sergei on vocals. in October both are replaced by Alexander - hereditary Devil-Worshipper and A. Crowley's grandson. He sacrificed to Satan all the members of NASTROMA band, where he acted as a singer, for there were no newborn babies around. The row went on under the name SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS. In December the demo tape "DOBR" is created and the band begins to prepare for the recording of the "Catacomb Abattoir" album, that was recorded in March'98 at GOLIMOPHONE STUDIO. Right after the studio session SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS invited a well-known child hater Yuri, who was into early CANNIBAL CORPSE albums and went all the way with Butch. You may ask a question, what kept Denis, innocent child, whose only weakness was to pee on IMPURITY members tombs, stuck to the other scoundrels' The answer is right here -in the spare time he together with Dimity organized bloody massacres in maternity hospitals and jacked off on the used tampons found in the ladies' room.

WHEN THE BAND WAS FIRST CREATED YOU HAD THE NAME FOETAL CARNAGE. WHY WAS THE NAME CHANGED TO SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS? WHAT DOES THIS NAME MEAN?

BUTCH: We had to change the name of the band under the pressure from the SPCC (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). It claimed a protest when Alex, getting absolutely mad at the gig, started to massacre the specially prepared newborn babies and to throw the shreds into the public, enraged at the sight of blood. The name SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS does not mean a damn, we just liked the word combination.

ALSO UNDER YOUR ORIGINAL NAME, YOU RECORDED TWO SONGS. HOW WERE THESE EARLY RECORDINGS? ARE THEY AVAILABLE ANYMORE?

DENIS: Unfortunately, all the previous recordings were lost in the fire that broke out in the studio after a bomb explosion. At that very moment Sergei and Vasily (vocals and bass), faggots both having AIDS, were there. Suffering from heroin abuse, they still tried to put the fire down, but failed due to the small amount of urine and died. Although, Vasily somehow managed to leave a will, where he asked us to use the photo of his charred corpse in the artwork for one of the albums.

YOUR PREVIOUS DEMO "DISINTERRING OF BUTCHERED REMAINS" GOT YOU A DEAL WITH RELICS RECORDS. WHAT KIND OF DEAL DID THIS LABEL GIVE YOU ARE THEY DOING A GOOD JOB OF HELPING PROMOTE S.D.?

BUTCH: RELICS RECORDS paid us $ 500 000 and provided us with an unlimited access to drugs. We undertook to bring them the scalps of the massacred babies, which they used for wrapping our CDs before selling them. They got so lazy though, that ceased to recognize us, so we had to made the promotion ourselves.

I NOTICED THAT THE ALBUM "CATACOMB ABATTOIR" WAS RECORDED IN MARCH '98, SO I WAS WONDERING IF YOU ARE READY TO BEGIN WORK ON SOMETHING NEW? IS IT STILL IN THE SAME VEIN AS ON "CATACOMB...", OR HAS IT PROGRESSED MUCH FROM THIS RELEASE?

DENIS: At the moment the work on our new album is going on We hope it will be recorded in the year 2000. It will consist of 9 tracks and will probably include a cover version of suffocation's "Infecting the Crypts". New album will represent more perfect technical performance, more powerful drive and more brutal harmonized roaring. We will imply all the efforts in order to make the difference between the new stuff and "CATACOMB ABATTOIR" as significant as the one between "EFFIGY OF THE FORGOTTEN" and "HUMAN WASTE".

WHAT WILL BE THE TITLE OF YOUR NEW CD WHEN READY TO RELEASE IT? WHAT SONG TITLES DO YOU HAVE FOR THIS AS WELL? WILL IT BE RELEASED THROUGH RELICS RECORDS?

BUTCH: The supposed title of the album will be "HACKLED IN GORE", there will be the songs: FLENSED BATTUE, BURNT ALIVE, LIMBLESS FATLING, HACKLED IN GORE, PRE-NATAL WHITLING, ETC... It will be released through the label that will pay more, ALL LABELS GET IN TOUCH!

YOUR BAND IS THE ONLY CONTACT I HAVE IN RUSSIA, IS THERE NOT THAT BIG OF A SCENE THERE, OR DO YOU THINK I JUST HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY ADS, OR CONTACT ADDRESSES FROM OTHER BANDS, ZINES, LABELS, ETC?

DENIS: We haven't got any death metal scene in Russia, there are just some bands throughout the cities of Russia, but their level is very low. Neither of these groups can beat Western bands but for us and FILTHY FLESH, that have just one demo in the wave of SUFFOCATION’s "Breeding the Spawn". The same goes with mags, and we haven't got any death metal labels at all.

S.D. IS A GORE BAND. DO YOU FEEL THAT GORE IN DEATH METAL HAS MADE A TREMENDOUS COME BACK? IT SEEMS THAT THERE ARE SO MANY NOW A DAYS?

DENIS: The musick and the lyrics for "CATACOMB ABATTOIR" were written already in the years '91-93 before we met each other. Now we just got the possibility to make it. Our album makes the listener go back to the roots of death metal - SUFFOCATION and CANNIBAL CORPSE. Modern bands cannot beat them - they are too flabby and dribbling.

IN THE SAME LINE OF QUESTIONING...DO YOU THINK "GORE" TOPICS ARE OVER PLAYED IN THIS SCENE? WHAT BANDS DO YOU NORMALLY LISTEN TO?

BUTCH: The more brutal the music of the band is, the more bloody and horrible the lyrics must be. Unfortunately, most albums of modern extreme death bands do not deserve single listening. Denis listens to VIVALDI, BACH, CLASSICAL GAS, SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS, MONSTROSITY, DEICIDE, SUFFOCATION, RYREXIA, DYING FETUS and I listen to E-TYPE, SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS, OLIVER SHANTI, DELIRIUM, F.L.A., CUSCO, INDIGO, AMAZONIA BLUE, DEEP FOREST, B-TRIBE, SACRED SPIRIT.

BUTCH: The lyrics for "C.A." were written already in the years'91-93 under the sole influence of the early lyrics of Chris Barnes, the greatest bloody maniac of all times, who managed to express his own madness in the lyrics. I was greatly influenced by his works and decided once and for all that I will write only similar stuff. Though, my latest lyrics for "HACKLED IN GORE" are sometimes even more brutal and bloody.

ON YOUR WEB PAGE, YOU USE A LOT OF PICTURES OF BABIES (I LOVE THEM! - BY THE WAY). I THINK IT'S COOL AS SHIT, BUT OTHERS MIGHT FIND THIS VERY OFFENSIVE. IS THIS YOUR POINT TO USING THEM, IS TO OFFEND PEOPLE, OR WHAT WERE YOUR INTENSIONS?

DENIS: These pictures were made by Yury and represent the visual part of our lyrics. We enjoy them a lot and we don't give a fuck about the feelings of the others.
