Dear All:
I am not sure you are aware of the news about funding and ranking of Universities in Taiwan. It was reported that National Taiwan University and National Chengkung University (NCU) were the two chosen for a Major funding boost that (hopefully) will boost them to the top 100 hundred universities in the world. Well good luck to them: money is not the everything. Further what is "top" mean? size, publication, number of Dept. etc...What about students? How they feel? How are their accomplishments be gauged?
Our beloved Jiatong University and Tsinghua University, did not make it. Because they do not have the necessary "size!" The point is almost that if they agreed to merger, they might have been qualified for the funding. As you know well, I was opposed to the merger of Jiaotong and Tsinghua from day one.
It is the time that we all roll up our sleves and do our utmost to help Jiaotong to be the best in the greater China region. It means all the campuses around the world. I am pretty sure that as far as Engineering and Technology are concerned NCU is no match for Jiaoda, because I have been at both institutions.
Let us be positive, let us contribute rather than lip-service!
I do not have the contact information or link with Jiada at Hsinchu, I would appreciate anyone who can get my message to the campus.
STH/Msy
PS: I plan to be in Taipei around Nov. 13th... How about a meeting of minds on how to make Jiaoda great in the 21st century?
