New programs working toward accreditation are required to qualify for candidacy. Candidacy, a pre-accreditation status, attests to the public and to prospective students that the program of social work has shown evidence of sound planning and of having the resources to implement its plans, has indicated its intent to work toward accreditation, and appears to have the potential to attain this goal. Subsequent to candidacy status, a program of social work is eligible to apply for initial accreditation after it has graduated students or if it will graduate students within the academic year in which the program presented was implemented fully. Students receiving a degree from a program in candidacy status receive full accreditation of that degree upon the program's successful and uninterrupted completion of candidacy and initial accreditation only if that degree was earned under the curriculum that receives initial accreditation.

This list of social work doctoral programs, which has been provided by the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work (GADE), is provided for your information. Phone numbers and Web site links can be found in the institution's accredited master's program listing.

Several programs were granted initial accreditation or were admitted to candidacy status at the June 1999 meeting of the Commission on Accreditation. Click here for a list of those actions. The next COA meeting is scheduled for October 1999.
