Home Safety:
Our Fire Department recommends the following safety tips:
Water Safety Tips
1. Never allow children to be alone around pools.
2. The adult should be watching them.
3. Have a phone in the pool area for
emergency calls;
do not leave
for even a second to answer the phone.
4. Do not talk on the phone or read
books or magazines
while watching
children around pools.
5. Do not depend on flotation devices
for lifesaving;
they contain
air and should be treated as toys.
6. Make sure the gate or door that
leads to the pool is
always locked.
Interior fences provide an additional
barrier and
should have self-closing, self-latching gates.
Remember: Pools are not the only water danger out there!
7. Never allow children to play around canals;
they are
deep and
have strong undercurrents.
8. Never leave your children while bathing them
in the
tub or sink.
Always have everything you need on hand
prior to
starting their bath.
9. Children can also drown in buckets,
the toilet, or even
the dog's
water dish.
According to the National Safety Council 850 children die in water related
accidents each year. The best prevention is education. Always know where
your children are, especially around water.
