Carney went to Normandy in July of 1944 as a replacement to the 28th Division in position around St.La'. He was part of a 30 caliber machine gun squad. On August 15, 1944, as he had just taken up position, he was hit in the right leg by mortar shrapnel. After receiving treatment in the field, he was sent back to Britain and then on to the U.S. He once said of his military career, "I never fired a shot, and maybe never wanted to. I really cost the government money". Although Carney has been in many movies over the course of his career, he is best known for his character Ed Norton, in the TV show "The Honeymooners".
