Born Melvin Kaminski to a Russian Jewish family on June 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Brooks joined WWII and became a combat engineer. He cleared German mines after the Battle of the Bulge. He also organized shows for the U.S. troops. When the German Army began transmitting propaganda over the loud speakers Brooks is said to have replied with his version of Al Jolson's "Toot-toot-tootsie-Goodbye"
