Growing up in Minnesota, a younger brother to James Arness, Graves excelled in sports, and by age 16 he was a radio announcer at WMIN in Minneapolis. He spent two years in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. After the war he studied drama at the University of Minnesota. His first film debut was in the 1951 movie: "Rogue River". Graves is best known for his role as Jim Phelps in the TV show "Mission Impossible".
