A pumped crowd in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada opened RAW with a bang. THe show began with an announcement that Intercontinental Champion Eddie Guerrero would meet Rob Van Dam in a Ladder match!
An incredible surprise caused Edmonton to erupt. Chris Benoit walked down the entrance ramp for the first time in a year! Benoit returned to his hometown after recuperating from surgery to repair damage to his spine.
The Rabid Wolverine took the microphone and had to wait several moments for the crowd to quiet down a bit. "It sure as hell feels good to be back," Benoit said. Benoit said he was drafted by Vince McMahon to be on SmackDown!, but there was no way WWE would go through his hometown without him being there. Benoit said he was only a few weeks away from returning and showing that he is the best technical wrestler in the world. Benoit was about to tell why he was there, but Eddie Guerrero suddenly came down and joined him in the ring!
Eddie said it was good to see Benoit and he missed him. More specifically, Eddie said he missed Benoit's jealousy. He accused Benoit of always feeling jealousy toward Guerrero because he was the one with all the talent and charisma among the Radicals, not to mention being the only one with Latino Heat! Guerrero said Benoit was always trying to hold him back. Guerrero said that since Benoit left, he accomplished a lot, including become the Intercontinental Champion. Plus, just last week he got the better of Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Benoit congratulated Guerrero for his accomplishments. He said he couldn't change Guerrero's accomplishments, but RVD could that night. Benoit scoffed at the notion that Guerrero was a better mat technician. He said it also takes a real tough guy to hit a guy from behind and run like Eddie had done to Stone Cold. Guerrero said he'd like to hit Benoit, and the two nearly came to blows, but RAW owner Ric Flair stopped the fight before it started.
Flair asked if Benoit could do anything civilized. Flair accused Benoit of starting a fight like a typical Canadian. Flair asked if Edmonton wanted to see Guerrero and Benoit fight, and if they wanted to see Austin walk down the ramp that night. Each suggestion met thunderous cheers. Flair said it was too bad though, because Austin was not there, but a special welcoming committee was waiting should the Rattlesnake rear his head. Flair turned to Benoit and said he would not let a SmackDown! star touch one of his RAW superstars. He ordered Benoit to get out of the ring. Benoit shoved Guerrero to the mat, causing Flair to scream for security. Guards soon came down and escorted the Wolverine from the ring!
Spike Dudley teamed up with Women's Champion Trish Stratus in mixed tag action against William Regal and Molly Holly. Backstage, Molly said she was a bit nervous because it was her first time in the ring with Spike since the two broke up. She said that Spike was a pervert who once tried to get to second base with her. Regal was appalled and promised to take care of Spike.
Spike came out on a tear and dominated Regal early on. Regal scrambled to the corner and tagged in Molly, who stepped up and swatted Spike across the face. Spike turned and tagged in Trish, who threw Molly around the ring. Unfortunately, the ref became distracted, allowing Regal to step in and deliver a solid knee to Trish's face. Trish kicked out of the pin attempt, though. Soon after, Trish surprised Molly with a backslide and got the pin. After the match, Regal clocked Spike in the back of the head with brass knuckles, and Molly did the same to Trish!
Backstage, Stephen Richards told Terri that Jazz had just undergone serious knee surgery. He also said the he and Jazz had grown very close. Richards said Jazz was very cute and cuddly. Jacqueline walked up and couldn't believe what she was hearing. Richards accused Jackie of being jealous and siad she wanted to hook up with him! Jackie suddenly smacked Stevie to the ground and tried to cover him to win the Hardcore Championship. But Shawn Stasiak broke up the count and tried to get his own. The Bossman came over and interrupted things as well. Before long, Terrie was all alone with a dazed Stevie. She covered him for three seconds and won the title! Stevie came too, though, and pinned her to retain his title, then stormed off.
The nWo engaged in a heated discussion in their locker room. Kevin Nash said that the other three members all had matches, and if anyone of them lost, that person may find himself kicked out of the nWo or the recipient of a savage beating. Booker T said he was unhappy with the nWo's theme music. He sang a few bars and said he wanted to come out to his own theme. He and X-Pac left Nash and Big Show, but cameras caught Goldust hiding in the locker room and eavesdropping on the whole conversation.
X-Pac and Booker T took on the Hardy Boyz in a tag match next. Jeff got things under control with the Whisper in the Wind taking Booker T down. Team Xtreme hooked up moments later for the Poetry in Motion on both their opponents. The Hardys' luck ran out soon after, though. Booker T nailed Jeff with a high kick and X-Pac hit the X-Factor to secure the win. The nWo's theme played at the conclusion of the match, but Booker T cut it off. He said he came there to give the people what they want to see. Booker's music hit and he whirled off a spineroonie!
Backstage, Paul Heyman asked Tony Garea how Trish was doing. Garea said she was just fine. Heyman headed into Trish's locker room to see for himself, but he came face to face with Bubba Ray Dudley! Bubba took Heyman by the lapel and smashed him through a door! He got in Heyman's face and ordered him to stay away from Trish, and to tell Brock Lesnar that he had his next big thing right here!
Tommy Dreamer appeared in the ring next to clear up some misunderstandings. Dreamer said he was really a normal guy. He spotted someone in the stands eating hotdogs. Dreamer asked if the dude was going to eat them all. He then accidentally caused the fan to drop his food on the floor. Dreamer stepped over the barrier to help the fan pick up, but he stepped in the food by accident. That didn't stop him from devouring the rest of one of the hotdogs, though. Dreamer returned to the ring, but amazingly the Undertaker came down before Dreamer could go any further.
The Dead Man said that he is the WWE Undisputed Champion and Dreamer was now on his time. He suggested that Dreamer get lost before he gets an ass kicking. Dreamer began to speak, but Taker cut him off and said that even Hulk Hogan didn't take up his time and neither did RVD last week. Taker asked why Dreamer thought he could stand in Taker's ring and take up his time. Taker ordered Dreamer to beat it. Dreamer stepped out of the ring, but Taker stopped him and said that since the two of them were there, how would he like a shot at the title! Dreamer lit up and said he would love it. Taker said he wouldn't get a shot, though, because he isn't worthy. Taker said there was a locker room full of superstars who aren't worthy.
Taker said that he is a nice guy, and that Dreamer likes to entertain people by doing disgusting things, so he had a suggestion. Taker produced a cup of his own chewing tobacco spit and ordered Dreamer to drink it. Taker spit into it as Dreamer protested, but Taker said it was an order. If Dreamer didn't drink it, Taker promised he'd be drinking his meals from then on through a tube. Taker dumped his entire wad of tobacco into the cup and handed it over. Unbelievably, Dreamer took the cup and downed the whole thing. Dreamer smiled and said it was pretty good! Taker responded by punching Dreamer square in the jaw and proceeded to give Dreamer a savage beating!
Paul Heyman psyched up Brock Lesnar in the locker room. He said that Bubba Ray Dudley was picturing Brock when he attacked Heyman earlier. He said Bubba didn't think Brock was man enough to do anything about it. Heyman asked if Brock was going to let Bubba manhandle him in the ring. Brock just stomped off angrily.
Brock tangled with Bubba Ray Dudley next. With Heyman screaming at his protégé, Brock began to pound on Bubba Ray. The action spread outside the ring, where Bubba managed to sling Brock into the steel steps. Bubba took things back inside and hit a neckbreaker, but was thwarted on his attempt at a Bubba Bomb. Brock suplexed Bubba then began to squeeze his abdomen in an attempt to choke Bubba out. Brock hit a belly to back suplex, but Bubba wouldn't stay down. Bubba Ray ht his own belly to back suplex to even things out. Bubba continued to roll and looked to have things wrapped up with a Bubba Bomb! But Heyman distracted the ref. An angry Bubba Ray chased after Heyman and smacked him to the ground. But soon after, Brock hit the F5 - the spinning facebuster named after the classification for the most powerful tornado - and took the win!
Coach was awaiting the arrival of Stone Cold when he discovered Raven sitting backstage. He asked Raven if he knew anything about Debra's supposed family emergency that kept Austin from the arena. Raven said that the emergency was actually Austin's. Every time Austin looks in the mirror, he sees a tortured soul, Raven said.
Big Show came to the ring to face Bradshaw. The Big Show overpowered Bradshaw at the start. Bradshaw rallied, but not even his Clothesline from Hell had any effect on Show. Big Show grabbed Bradshaw and hit the Showstopper to pick up the win.
Backstage, the nWo celebrated on going 2-0. Goldust, dressed in an nWo shirt and his face painted white and black, came up behind X-Pac clapping. X-Pac yelled at Goldust, but Booker came to his aid, calling Goldust a freaky Oreo Cookie!
At The World, Al Snow showed off the Tough Enough finalists and pitted them in arm wrestling contests. Jake defeated Kenny and Linda took down Jackie. But who the two winners will be come this Thursday at 10 p.m. is still a huge question mark.
Backstage, RVD congratulated Terri on her Hardcore Title win from earlier in the night. RVD said that a Ladder match is very dangerous, but for the IC Title, it was worth it. He said he would climb the ladder and win the Championship because when it comes to climbing the ladder of success, nobody gets as high as RVD!
Outside, Coach saw a truck pull up. Coach rushed up, thinking it was Stone Cold, but it instead turned out to be Howard Finkle, who launched into a pointless tirade about why he was late.
Goldust, dressed in nWo regalia, took on Crash Holly. Goldust hoped that his performance would allow him to enter the nWo. Crash, although undersized, took it to Goldust, felling him with a dropkick. But Goldust stormed right back and soon pinned Crash. Kevin Nash came down to the ring following the match. Goldust dropped to his knees in respect while Nash finished Crash off with a boot to the face. Goldust backed up the entrance ramp with Nash staring back at him the whole way.
Eddie Guerrero found Ric Flair in his office and asked if the RAW owner had heard anything about Stone Cold. Flair told him not to worry because he had the welcoming committee in place.
The Ladder match between Eddie Guerrero and Rob Van Dam came up next. AS predicted, the match got going with a fast and furious pace. The two brawled outside the ring where RVD hit a guillotine leg drop off the ring skirt. Guerrero retaliated by whipping RVD face first into the steel ladder at ringside. Guerrero and RVD continued to beat each other senseless. Suddenly, Chris Benoit began walking through the crowd! He was stopped by a security guard, but Benoit merely produced a ticket stub and began walking down to ringside!
Guerrero began to take the upper hand and he brought the ladder inside the ring and set it up beneath the hanging Intercontinental Championship. Guerrero got to the top of the ladder, but RVD got to the top turnbuckle, leapt and kicked the ladder out, causing Eddie to take a sick fall to the matt. RVD followed by slamming Guerrero on the ladder and hitting the Rolling Thunder. RVD then tried to climb the ladder, but Guerrero caught up to him and delivered a sunset flip from the top down to the mat. Eddie set up the ladder, but a fan dashed in and knocked it down before being taken out by security. Guerrero climbed the ladder once again and this time delivered a spectacular flip off the top onto RVD below!
RVD tried to counter soon after. He smashed Eddie's face into a steel chair then clocked him with a Van Daminator. RVD placed the ladder on Guerrero and launched a split legged moonsault onto the champ. RVD climbed the ladder, but Guerrero pulled him down and suplexed him into the ladder. Eddie then set the contraption up in the corner, but his plan worked against him as RVD Irish Whipped Eddie into the steel. RVD then monkey flipped Eddie right into the ladder, followed by another ladder-aided Rolling Thunder.
Guerrero kicked RVD off the ladder and tried to attack his opponent with a steel chair. RVD countered with another Van Daminator that put Eddie down on the mat. RVD set up the ladder on the side and tried to hit the Five Star Frog Splash off the top, but the ladder gave out. Guerrero then climbed the top turnbuckle, but he was sent crashing into the ring wall by RVD. Van Dam then climbed up and grabbed the hanging championship to win the match!
Guerrero began attacking the new Intercontinental Champion with the ladder, but Stone Cold suddenly raced down and let loose a flurry of punches on Guerrero! Flair and Arn Anderson tried to stop him but both were soon easily dispatched by the pissed-off Rattlesnake! Stone Cold was then joined by Chris Benoit who raced in and stood by Austin. But without warning, the Wolverine began stomping and beating on the Rattlesnake! Benoit slammed Austin to set up a Five Star Frog Splash from Guerrero! RAW closed with Benoit and Guerrero raising their arms triumphantly!
