SOME of Britain's newest bombs were dropped on Hamburg during Saturday night. Read these testimonials given yesterday: By a pilot who tried one of the bombs: "A huge heaving mass like a volcanic eruption rose and settled down into a great red glow fully half a mile in diameter." By another pilot who saw this bomb burst: "It was away on our port side. We were ten miles off, but even from that distance it was terrific." By a pilot who attacked Bremerhaven: "I had with me one of the powerful bombs. After it had burst I could see a great circle of red, and o the rim of it, quite a distance from the centre, I saw buildings going up in the air. Although I have been on thirty one raids I have never seen anything to match the effect of this bomb." Dock Fires Thousands of fire-bombs were also rained on Hamburg, which is Germany's second largest city and greatest seaport. Fires were started in the industrial and dock areas. Night fighter, says the Air Ministry News Service were up again attempting to intercept our bombers as they neared the enemy coast, but , save for an Me. 110 which followed one of our planes for half an hour and then broke off after a brief exchange of fire, they were no obstacle. Our crews arrived over Hamburg to find low drifting clouds between them and the ground, but every now and then there were clear patches through which to aim their bombs and see. While Hamburg was being attacked other planes bombed the naval bases at Emden, Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven. The docks at Le Havre and at Ymuiden were also targets. During the day an enemy supply ship was sunk off Norway when three were attacked. Another in convoy off the Frisian Islands was damaged. In a further raid two planes on the ground at an airfield near Sund, Norway, were destroyed and others machine-gunned. Five of our planes are missing from all these day and night operations. In the daylight attack on an airfield between Bergen and Sund in Norway, the pilot of one of our bombers came down to 100 feet. One of his bombs, bursting under the tail of and Me. 110 while it was taking off, threw it against a rock. Another Messerschmitt which was about to take off was also bombed and was seen to crash. On the runway there were five other enemy fighter with their engines running, and these were machine-gunned. Soon after this attack the pilot was joined by another of our planes, which was being attacked by three fighters. Together they held off the enemy in a running fight.
