Dihydrogen Monoxide This was a story I just read that I thought I would share with you. We all know that plants come with two names, the common and the scientific or botanical names, e.g. peppers and capsicum. A lot of other things have common names too. This story was brought to light by Nathan, a 14 year old, from Idaho Falls, Idaho. As part of a science fair project, Nathan wanted to get 50 signatures for a petition banning "Dihydrogen Monoxide". Why? Nathan made a list supporting his claim as part of the petition, here is the list in part: 1) It's a major component to acid rain 2) It contributes to erosion. 3) It has been found in cancerous tumors 4) It decreases the effectiveness of brakes 5) In its gaseous state, it can cause severe burns. Sounds pretty scary huh? Out of the 50 people Nathan approached, 43 signed the petition, 6 were undecided and 1 refused. The one that refused the petition must have known something... Dihydrogen Monoxide's common name is water...hee-hee...I would've signed it too probably... Good ol' H2O...you go Nathan!!! Nathan said that he was pretty appalled by his results, but was glad he went home with first place!!!! Points to ponder... Peace, Hugs and Aqua Pura, chefmike |
