WWWCW History |
In May of 1998, two members of the WWWWF E-Fed were fed up with the way things were being run. Tired of a federation that seemed to ignore story lines, lacked a fundemental understanding of the importance of titles and an all round lack of wrestling knowledge. Two Canadian kids thought there could be a better way.
June 1998, World Wide Web Championship Wrestling was born. With a very simple web page design, and limited roleplaying talent the 3WCW project was up and running. Running on two weekly cards Monday Nightmare and Thursday Night Thrashing, aswell as monthly PPV's and Clash of the Champions. The fed was powered by the TNM wrestling simulator, and was the project of Markus and Eric Maltby. There were many problems with the early model, that was 3WCW. Roleplaying was done on both a messageboard and through email, causing lots of confusion. Soon the decision was made that 3WCW would become a strictly email based federation. Results were done strictly by the simulator and with little creative thought or reason the cards suffered. A lack of talented roleplayers made things very difficult. Through the early days though some great talent was found. Characters such as Gravedigger, Death Warrent, Johnny Canuck and Italian Stallion started to take shape. The original WWWCW was short lived however as in October '98, a mass firing was done and the federation would start again from scratch.
In October of 1998, a huge break through in the 3WCW was achieved when Egroups was brought into the picture and used to make roleplaying much simpler. And although the original firing was done because of a lack of interest with the current members the fed had 24 people sign up in only 2 short days. Even with this new influx of interest the product still suffered. TNM was still used as the program to generate the results, however the outcome would be based on roleplaying that was done leading up to the match. Also the Maltby's started to add little notes to the end of the matches, to allow angles to develop. While the notes were small it lead to a huge increase in roleplaying. The product suffered when behind the scenes an ownership dispute lead Eric Maltby to step down, and left Markus squarely incharge. The fed however regained its momentum and was highly successful with a record of 570 emails sent during the month of April 1999. Perhaps the biggest change during this run of the 3WCW was the decision that the wrestler controlled by Markus Maltby (Johnny Canuck) would now be able to win title belts. Something that in the past had been avoided because of a worry that other wrestlers might be upset over ownership having titles. The federation continued on until another closing which occured on May 12, 1999 due to a technical problem with the original webpage.
Only two short days later a new webpage was up, and with the champions remaining the same, the fed was back up and running in total only one week of action was lost to this technical error. The fed was off stronger than ever. The way results were done was completely overhauled. Results were completely written by either Eric or Markus. And the roleplaying showed that the people were grateful. Then the PWWF showed up on the scene. PWWF was created by two members of the 3WCW (Judge and Bossman), and a friendly rivalry was created. The shows were rivals and had ratings wars. A very entertaining idea, which led to one of the worst ideas in 3WCW history. In July, the PWWF and 3WCW were merged and a new fed was born. North American Championship Wrestling was supposed to bring the best aspects of both feds together, and create the greatest efed experience of all time. Unfortunetly that was not the case. Miscommunications and constant misunderstandings lead to a federation that lasted just long enough to hand out all the titles and then host 1 Monday and 1 Thursday show. On August 31 the feds, NACW-WWWCW-PWWF, were all closed leaving the wrestlers without a place to apply their trade. During the close down a new fed came on the seen. Steve Blackman and Michael Costello's XCW. Giving home to many former 3WCW wrestlers.
Then in Ocotber of 1999 Markus Maltby attempted a restart, and for the first time since the fed was created, a restart failed. However not to be discouraged on December 1, 1999 Eric Maltby stepped up to the plate and again started a re-start. This time the people came. The majority of XCW'ers who had been in WWWCW decided to leave XCW and put their trust back into the 3WCW. Including one incident where Rocky Stonage, who was the current XCW Tv Champion made a huge statement by throwing their belt into the garbage and leaving for WWWCW. And on December 13th World Wide Web Championship Wrestling would start up, but only a few short weeks later the work became too much for Eric and he thought he would be forced to close the WWWCW forever. That was until Markus Maltby stepped up to the plate and hit the homerun that would keep the federation running. However, shortly after a dispute between Eric and Markus again led to Eric stepping down, and left Markus scrambling for help. The help would be found in the form of Nick Waeltz, president of the struggling PWWF. However constant miscommunications between Waeltz and Maltby led to Markus handing control over to Nick, who hired longtime 3WCW participant Mike Schrader (Shawn Michaels/Vic Damon). Perhaps Mike simply underestimated the time and effort needed to make the WWWCW as successful as it had been, but it was clear during his week as VP, that he would not cut it and Mike Schrader's VP character was let go. And Joe Munno was brought in.
Perhaps the biggest change would occur in June of 2000, when the 3WCW was so popular we were literally turning people away everyday. So, after a quick brainstorm, and a search of someone who could run it, WWWCW Xtreme was created. Basically Xtreme would be a minor league training ground, giving the new people people an idea of what to expect when the stepped up to the plate, and joined WWWCW. Matt Baker (Rage) would be the guy to run this fed, under the watchful eye of Markus and Eric Maltby aswell as Nick Waeltz. Until Nick Waeltz dissappeared from the scene, leaving cards unwritten and telling no one what was going on. Joe Munno was brought in to be the new Vice-President. It would be he, who would try to return the federation to greatness. Shortly after the long awaited return of one of our original members Gravedigger occured, and the fed seemed to be on its way. Aside from pushing his own character more than he deserved (Bossman eventually won the World Title and headlined BATB3), Munno seemed to be doing well. Everyone was enjoying his work, except well maybe for Gravedigger. On August 17, 2000 Gravedigger wrote an email entitled "The Real Deal" which outlined several points that he saw happening in the 3WCW. Upset over the direction of his Hall of Fame character, and the lack of attention to angles for himself Digger took out his frustrations on Joe Munno, and retired for the last time. A short few hours later, Joe Munno stepped down as VP, and handed control of the federation back over to Eric and Markus Maltby, ending the PWWF reign of terror over WWWCW. The names of WWE (at the time WWF), WCW and ECW wrestlers would no longer be accepted. Those with real wrestlers names would be forced to make the change.
And the federation would run until September 12, 2000 where Eric and Markus would step down for the last time.
Which brings us to 2003... and after 30 months of inactivity the long anticipated return of the WWWCW!!
