The Skies the Limit?
In a two page in-depth interview with Local Transport Today, Welsh
Assembly Government transport & economic development minister sets
out his policy priorities, with an interesting change of direction...
- Intra-Wales air services feature strongly in the article as a
means of connecting the north with the south of Wales.
- A steering group studying air's potential is due to report early
in 2004.
- The brief includes air links to Cardiff and possibly Swansea from
"one or possibly two" airports in the north.
- Such air links will require subsidy.
- Davies expects to have made "substantial progress" on
air travel in Wales in the next five years.
- The Assembly continues to press Westminster for greater control
over the Strategic Rail Authority in Wales and powers similar to the
Mayor of London over council transport spending.
- It also wishes to have powers to establishment of PTAs and PTEs -
though Davies stresses that his focus is on getting the existing
system of local authority partnerships to work better.
- Davies also hopes to have made significant progress over the next
five years to get people out of cars and on to public transport.
Meanwhile, there remain concerns as to whether a proposed major road
scheme between Cardiff and Cardiff airport will be built, following its
rejection by WAG.
