Homes | News | Features School Report - DfT examines the "First" yellow bus pilots Widely reported in the media is the conclusion of a Department for Transport study into American school buses. The vehicles and the system under which they operate are proving to be a hit with pupils and parents, though pupils feel that the colour is unpopular, especially at secondary school level. Key among the report's findings are that the security, dedicated drivers, convenience and safety are popular. The study looked at all seven First yellow school bus pilots. Wrexham's is by far the biggest of these and, indeed, the biggest innovative school bus scheme in Britain, when the proportion of vehicles is considered. The research indicated that such schemes also have a valuable role in reducing the number of cars on the road at school time. It showed that parents and pupils felt reassured by the vehicles and the way the buses were operated. Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reports that an education charity believes that introducing yellow school buses on a large scale would save the national economy some £450mil. The Sutton Trust reports that for an annual subsidy of £80mil and a 50p per trip charge per pupil, savings would be generated worth 2½ times the scheme's cost. |
