Module Assessment FAQ

  1. There are four pass grades under the new Regulations, Distinction, Merit, Pass and Compensated Pass. Under the Old Regulations (modules prior to October 2000) there were only three, Distinction, Pass and Compensated Pass. I have given you the clarification of these regulations below:

    1. New Regulations:

A student must pass both components of an assessment with a grade of between 50% and 59% to receive a Pass. A compensated Pass can be applied to marks between 40% and 49% in one component as long as the overall mark is over 50%. The students are awarded a Merit for an overall mark of 60% to 69% and a Distinction for an overall mark of 70% and above.

    2. Old Regulations:

A student must pass both components of an assessment with a grade of above 40% to receive a Pass and a compensated Pass can be applied to marks between 35% and 39% in one component. In order to gain a Distinction, students must have an overall grade of 70% with no less than 60% grade in one of the two components.

  2. If a student has to re-sit a component of a module either the assignment or exam, then they can only receive the maximum of a Pass as a result unless the student has Extenuating Circumstances and these are upheld for the re-sit, in which case, the result is considered as if taken for the first time.

  3. Overall grading is as follows:

    PGC -
3 modules with Distinction and 1 Pass or above = PGC with Distinction
3 modules with Merit and 1 Pass or above = PGC with Merit

    PGD -
6 modules with Distinction and 2 Pass or above = PGD with Distinction
6 modules with Merit and 2 Pass or above = PGD with Merit

  4. You can take more than 8 modules if you would like to but the extra modules will not count towards your final MSc. For the MSc under the new regulations you will need to have passed 8 modules + Research Methods and Proposal module + Project.
