Wendy and I wanted to celebrate ! Her K-1 Visa interview at the US Consulate in Hong Kong had been a complete success ! We wanted to get away, and we had never been to Macau together.
Macau is an island to the west of Hong Kong. It had been a Portuguese territory for over 400 years until it was given back to China in December, 1999. It is full of both European and Chinese history, and is quite beautiful.
Getting There In StyleWe booked passage on a turbojet ferry. It made the run from Hong Kong to Macau in just over one hour. It was one fast and good-lookin' craft. That's one of the turbojet ferries behind me in this photo. |

The Sights of Old MacauAfter our arrival we dove right in to sight-seeing. We were charmed by the blend of Portuguese and Chinese architecture. A good example of this was the plaza in front of the Maritime Musuem, as you can see here. |
Another charming blend of architecture was the public square of Largo Do Senado, shown here. |

The Portugeuse brought Christianity to Macau, and there are famous churches all over this Asian island. Here is one, the church of Penha. |
However, the most famous landmark on Macau is the Facade at Sao Paulo. The facade is the only remaining wall of a great cathedral built by the Portuguese in the early 1600s. You can see the complete facade in this photo. |

In this closer shot, you can still see some of the detail of the Facade. It is still quite beautiful even in its current state. |
Guia Fort is another great spot to explore old Macau. It is an old fort of the Portuguese, and has a great view of the island too ! It's great for picture taking, as you can see here. |
