Douglas, Wy. The 2000 Douglas High School Invitational Wrestling Tournament took place on 14 and 15 Jan. at the Douglas High School gymnasium. Nineteen schools participated and all three HS classifications were represented.
This tournament started out being a shootout and ended up that way. Class 3A Worland held the team point lead well into the second day of competition. Worland, Douglas, Newcastle, Laramie, and Cheyenne Central were all within a few points of leading on team points throughout the tournament. Douglas and Worland ended with 9 wrestlers placing while Newcastle, Laramie and Cheyenne all had 8 place winners.
3A power Worland held the lead with a few points over Douglas going into the Consolation quarterfinals. Douglas came away after that round with a slim lead, 6.5 points separating the two. The Douglas grapplers were able to get several pins, technical falls and major decisions in the consolation quarter and semifinals to stretch their lead to around ten points over the Warriors from Worland. After the Consolation and Championship finals Douglas had secured the tournament team championship with a 21.5 lead over second place Worland.
The 3A schools seem to have a solid power in Wyoming wrestling right now. Douglas, Worland and Newcastle (all 3A schools) finished 1-2-3 with 4th place Cheyenne Central (4A) finishing 22.5 points behind 3rd place Newcastle. The Laramie Plainsmen (4A) were fifth, trailing Cheyenne Central by a mere 4 points.
On 21 and 22 January all the 3A teams in the state will converge on Thermopolis for a huge and important tournament. Several 2A teams will also be represented there. After the Thermopolis tournament the 3A team and individual rankings should start to shake out pretty well. Star Valley and Powell (both 3A teams) will be there creating havoc of their own and vying for some upsets, Im sure. Any of the five teams will have a shot at the team title in Thermopolis.
The Most impressive wrestler at the Douglas Invite was a little guy from Buffalo. 112 pounder, Casey Farris had a very impressive tournament. He managed to upset Reynold Candelaria of Laramie in the semis and then upset freshman powerhouse Kyle Dye of Kelly Walsh (Casper) in the finals for the championship. Mr. Farris was voted as the Most Valuable Wrestler of the tournament by the coaches.
There were over 60 Top Ranked wrestlers in this very exciting
tournament, each giving their all in many memorable matches.
One last note, I would like to recognize the officials by simply
stating that the officiating was excellent! Thanks Guys!!
