The Laramie Plainsmen flexed their
muscles Big Time last nigtht, as they defended their 1999 4A
State Championship against 4A Runner Up, Rock Springs. As we all
know, anything can happen during a wrestling match and last night
was no exception. There were some big match-ups between `99 State
Placewinners that were unpredictable. The first came at 125 lbs,
where the `99 103 lb State Champ Remington Trabing of Laramie,
faced off with Justin Gomez, 2nd in State last year at 112. With
Gomez leading 2-0 in the second period, Trabing scored a reversal
and immediately put Gomez to his back, pinning him in 3:35.
Next in the battle of the State Placers at 140 lbs was the highly
touted match up between two `99 State Champions, Josh Cook and
Danny Carroll. After a low scoring first period, Carrol took
charge and dominated Cook, pinning him in 4:19.
At 152 Pete vanderHeiden and Anthony Cordova were tied at 1-1
with 8 seconds remaining in the match when Cordova shot a nice
double and finally caught vanderHeiden off gaurd, taking him to
the mat as time ran out. Although low scoring, the match was
quite exciting, evident as the home crowd of Tigers really got
into it.
The 160 pound bout featured a `98 place winner for Laramie, Nate
Nicholas, against another `99 place winner for the Tigers, Josh
Johnson. Nicholas dominated the match from the beginning and
never let up, beating Johnson by a major decision 11-3.
