PHS wrestlers do well in prestigious three-state meet The Powell wrestlers got plenty of bang for their travel buck on a trip to Gillette, where they parlayed one round trip bus ride and two night's lodging into duals against seven opponents from three states Thursday and Friday, Jan. 5 and 6. Even better was that the lodging and several meals were provided by sponsors of the Pat Weede Memorial - Gillette Invitational. The Panthers of Coach Steve Zawacki defeated Rock Springs (45-18), Alliance, Neb. (29-27), Broomfield, Colo. (43-25) and the host Camels (42-32). They were beaten by Uintah High School of Vernal, Utah (50-15), Star Valley (41-19) and Green River (50-18). Zawacki went to Gillette expecting to be impressed by 4A top contender Green River, and he was. The Wolves cut a wide swath through the field. "They beat everybody," said the Panther coach. "We scored as many or more points on them as anyone." The surprise for Zawacki was how good the Star Valley Braves turned out to be. "I've seen Worland and right now I'd have to rank them (Star Valley) on top in 3A," he said of how he views the pecking order. The Panthers' individual standout was Shane Zawacki. He ended up with an unblemished record, defeating each of his seven opponents, and was the all-tournament team's 152-pound selection. The senior won four matches by pin and three via decision. Carson Kleinfeldt (171) lost only once in seven trips to the mat and posted a two-day record of 6-1. Jacob Jarrett (189), Andy Scott (145), Ryan Richardson (140) and Jared Shuler (125) were all 5-2 "It was a great experience," said Coach Zawacki of the format as well as the quality of opponents. "Our younger kids kind of took it on the chin, but they all got a win. Now they know what kind of intensity you need to be really good." Zawacki appreciated the format, a rotating series of seven head-to-head dual meets, for the way it kept every wrestler in the competition all the way through. "In a regular invitational, some of those kids would only have wrestled twice and been out," he said. "But in this one every kid got seven matches." The Panthers' next action comes Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12 and 13 at the Miles City Invitational in Miles City, Mont. After that it's the team's next-to-last home date of the season, Thursday, Jan. 18 against Greybull/Riverside at 6 p.m. Results - Powell (P), Gillette (G), Uintah (U), Star Valley (SV), Broomfield (B), Alliance (A), Rock Springs (RS), Green River (GR): · 103 pounds - Kanin Asay (P) pinned by Sterling Oglesby (G), :38; pinned by Chad Young (U), :53; pinned by Mike Welker (SV), 5:25; lost to John Walsh (B), 14-4 major decision; def.
