1. Be aware of your surroundings. Look for bear tracks or noises that may alert you to a grizzly's presence. 2. DO NOT go into the hills alone. Always have a partner 3. Make noise when walking trails 4. Keep a clean camp. 5. Hang food from trees or put in bear proof containers. 6. Carry Pepper Spray 7. The best bear deterrent is being knowledgeable about bears and their behavior, and knowing what to do if you get attacked. Hunting in Grizzly Country Killing Big Game: If in timber try and get carcass to open area. NEVER hunt alone, have weapons ready. If possible have someone on guard. Never leave gut piles near trails. Leaving Kill Over Night: Drag quarters several hundred yards from sight of kill. Best to hang quarters in trees. Drape article of cloth over quarters, if you see this article of clothing disturbed, it alerts you something has been in your meat. Riding into Sight of Kill: Observe kill sight sight from a distance. Approach sight making noise. Look for signs of Grizzly (tracks, etc). Never fight a bear for a carcass! If you see a grizzly has claimed your game, you must NEVER try and get it back.
PEPPER SPRAY: Make sure that you know how to use your pepper spray. When discharged it will actually kick much like a firearm. Know where to aim at the bear, shoot directly into the bears face. Bring enough pepper spray, and make sure it has an oil base and not water base. Water based pepper spray will freeze. Pepper spray is not a repellent, do not spray it on your person or around your camp sight, it is only effective when discharged into a bears face at close range. Make sure when discharging the spray you shoot in long blasts and do not be afraid to use an entire canister.
