It is important to know why bears attack, and what humans do to provoke these attacks. In rare cases, grizzlies have taken on a predatory nature, in such situation the bear will attack unprovoked, simply for food.

Types of Bear Human/Conflicts:

1. Defense of Cubs

2. Invasion of Territory

3. Carcass Defense

4. Predatory

Defense of Cubs: It is all animals instinct to look after their young. Grizzlies are no different. A bear will aggressively defend their young.

Invasion of Territory: A bear has a natural boundary and anytime a human penetrates this boundary, they may become aggressive.

Carcass Defense: A bear will aggressively defend any food source. If you get too close to a bear with food, it will become aggressive towards you.

Predatory: Occasionally a bear will size up a human for food. In this encounter the bear will make itself evident to you as it circles sizing you up.

Bear Behavioral Modes:

1. Wild

2. Man Wise

3. Habituated

Wild: These are bears who have little contact with man. They will often flee as most animals fear the unknown. However, they too are dangerous animals.

Man Wise: For some reason, the man wise bear has associated man with danger. Either it has seen another bear killed by man, or itself has had a bad experience with man. The bears too are still dangerous when with cubs, food or its space is intruded.

Habituated: These are the most dangerous of bears. They are used to man and have no fear of them.

Generally if you follow the laws of these bears and their space, encounters are rare. Bears act naturally through evolution, if you know their ways and fears, you can avoid confrontation.
