steatite beads from iraq iran Persia These beads date to around 3200 B.C. They were originally used to close doorways and windows in very hot countries, such as Persia. These beads were found in excavations near the Tigris river in modern Iraq and Iran.

The beads are of soft steatite stone, each 1/8 to 3/8 inch long. Despite the obvious huge amount of time required for their preparation, there are millions and millions of these beads which have survived. These are strung on nylon to show how they could be used for a necklace or bracelet.
