Losing
Our Way
By Lord Lothar The Patron Saint |
Often times I meet a young
knight or mage, who is just beginning his journey and wishes to walk a
righteous path. I tell him, beginning such a path is easy, for when we
are new and not yet exposed to our own anger and selfishness it is easy
to want to become something better.
After a while we build our nest egg, we become stronger, better, smarter, we gain more possessions and prestige, all the while trying to be righteous and kind and generous. But we revel in our newfound power. We lose gratitude in what we have, we lose sight when we are rewarded and choose to linger in our success, to revel in our pride. It is at this point in his career the adventurer is most vulnerable, and we see the real effects of success. Because with power there is always something new to gain, something new to achieve, and we lose the purpose to which we began our quest in the first place. Is it wrong to want to build a guild or following, to earn a castle or become a grandmaster in a skill? Of course not, but such achievements are spiritually useless and therefore of no real value if they are not steps or tools with which we pursue our righteous way. Sitting at the bank and bragging about one's achievements, that is not how we go about teaching the next generation. For we will find that the revelry of our own accomplishments will leave us hollow. Instead I submit that the true accomplishments are in seeing that your brethren are able to achieve or surpass what you have done, in the pursuit of righteousness. When one donates time, resources, or properties to another less fortunate, the true reward of such an act is the act itself, and the hope that your actions will one day lead your benefactor to give his life for his brothers. |
