The Monster List by Environment

Climate is the first environmental consideration. In general, the Old Empires has a warm climate; the exceptions would be mountain peaks and ocean depths where the temperature remains rather cold year–round. Varying applications of climate control magic in Mulhorand, Unther, Chessenta, and Murghôm allow creatures which normally would live in temperate zones to thrive in this area of the South as well. However, denizens of solely–cold climates will not be found anywhere in the Old Empires except the heights of a few mountain ranges.

Habitat is the second part of defining an environment. In the most general terms, there are aerial, aquatic, terrestrial, and subterranean habitats.

Aerial

Creatures which have a fly speed may be encountered anywhere above land or sea, and some may appear underground or underwater as well. An allip is one example of a monster which could be encountered anywhere. There may be no specific locations in the Old Empires which are purely aerial, but nevertheless this is an important environment.

Aquatic

On the other hand, creatures which have only a swim speed can only be encountered in lakes, oceans, and rivers.

This includes various bodies of more–or–less stationary water too small to be called oceans. Lakes are typically, but not always, freshwater.

Terrestrial

This is by far the largest category of habitats, and since the PCs are generally landlubbers it makes sense that most of their encounters will be on the ground. Everything with a somewhat solid surface and sky overhead is in this group: deserts, forests, hills, marshes, mountains, plains, and urban areas.

For the purposes of this discussion, the deck of a ship and the interior of an airy bubble count as terrestrial environments.
