Naboo
The beauty of this planet goes unmatched in all of the galaxy. Its forests and swamps are filled with bizarre and exotic creatures. Its fields are covered with the greenest grass which sways in the cool wind. Its crystal blue waters serve as a city of lights for an elusive species. Its capital is a portrait of colorful edifices and majestic statues. The sight of Naboo is one that catches the visitor's heart, breath, and imagination.
Otoh Gunga
Deep within the refreshing waters of Lake Paonga rests the secret Gungan home of Otoh Gunga. You'll need to use a breathing apparatus to reach this illuminated city, which appears out of the darkness like thousands of glittering jewels. The various portals that you will pass through capture and hold the air inside the city and keep out the water. In here, Boss Nass is in charge of all Gungan activities and political agendas. They usually prefer to remain introverted, although they've made alliances with "outsiders" from time to time.
Once you decide to leave Boss Nass and the Gungans, be mindful of the hazardous Colo Claw fish and the other treacherous monsters of the deep. They are famished and are looking for a scrumptious meal.
The Swamps and Forests
The planet is primarily covered with the lush and fertile forestlands and murky swamps. There are thousands of interesting animals roaming around in these parts including the Peko Peko and Nuna birds. But there are many which have yet to be documented. Deep within the forest is a refuge for the Gungan society whenever they have been invaded. It is centered around a site that holds the ruins of beautiful statues from ages ago. Lake Paonga is located in these forests.
Theed
Although there are several small cities scattered over Naboo's green lands, the capital of Theed is the one which deserves the most attention. Found among some impressive waterfalls, Theed has a style all its own. It enormous green domes top off the beautifully and meticulously painted buildings.
If you are granted permission by the
Queen Herself, you will take a tour of the Royal Palace. Notice the massive
carved statues as you ascend the steps. Inside you will find some grand
architecture, beautiful decorations, and a young Queen who's leadership and
abilities have earned her the respect and gratitude of the Naboo as well as all
of the Republic.
The Naboo are known for their love of art and craftsmanship - as seen in their architecture and elaborate apparel. Even devices used in war - something the peaceful Naboo don't take an interest in - are turned into works of handcrafted art such as the Royal N-1 Starfighter. And of course, there's the sleek starship that serves as Queen Amidala's transport.
Naboo was perhaps the ultimate fusion of digital wizardry and modelmaking magic. The model shop's exotic towers and archways provided the setting for some breathtaking illusions including the victory procession of CG Gungans and live-action characters. A crew of about 40 people worked almost three months to create 68 separate buildings, each an average of three to four feet tall. Both Theed and Otoh Gunga were assembled and shot outdoors on a large platform holding a rotatable table. It was so big, the production purchased a hangar to hold the set-up at night to protect the meticulous models from the elements. The skies were added later through the use of digitally painted backgrounds.
The city of Caserta, Italy provided several outside shots for Naboo and of course, the magnificent Royal Palace, or Reggia di Caserta. It was built by Charles VII King of France who lived from 1422-61. The palace consists of 1200 rooms and a 116 step staircase which was carved from a single massive block of stone. The gardens host beautiful arrangements, ponds, and fountains. Even with the technology available, Lucas found Caserta too beautiful to bother with digital creations. "There are some things you wouldn't want to create in the computer," he said." "It was much easier to take advantage of the creations that already exist."
