River in the Sky

By Jester

I've an idea where a summoner in the Wastes of Baalgor opens a rift an attempt to provide water for his people. He opens one to the middle of a lake on the Eastern territory, sucking several fishermen thru, the lake drains to half it's normal level.. It is continuously fed by rivers so the water continues to keep flowing.

The water flows from a rift 300 ft in the air. The players will be in the east and are trying to figure out what has happened and how to get the people back and close the hole.

The morning was cool and misty as Ta'lor and his 2 sons, Dian and Mott rowed out to their favorite spot. Just off an Island was a shoal where the really big ones would browse for shiners. Ta'lor had been coming here all his life as did his father and grandfather. They would fish with drop lines this
morning.  Mott a 10 year old was very excited that his father was finally going to show him "the spot". Dian now 15 had been coming here with his father for 5 years and was already an experienced fisherman. He had the knack, as his father proudly would say. "Dian can catch a fish without even any bait, just tosses in a hook and twitches it in the water and the fish go mad."

There arms warmed by the mile long row were cooled by the morning mist.  All 3 hear an odd crackle of thunder from somewhere ahead in the mist.  "Odd" Ta'lor mutters today is supposed to be clear.
The rumble passes quickly, as a slight breeze blows the mist around.  The water becomes bit choppy.

"Pull in your oars son" Ta'lor tells Dian "What is that odd sound?" he says as he stands up
His eyes grow wide as a 10ft wall of water comes racing out of the mist towards him. His shout of warning drowned out by the roaring wall of water.  It slams into the small boat. sending all overboard .

COLD BLACKNESS CONFUSION

Coming up after the wave passes. Ta'lor breaks the surface with a gasp followed by his 2 son. All 3 are excellent swimmers. "Our boat is gone!" Dian shouts thru shivering teeth. "Are you both alright?" the frightened father asks  Both nod as they shiver in the cold waters. "Swim towards the island boys"
he says it's no more than a mile from here. This way" Ta'lor is truly scared, it is late spring and the waters of lake Vigna are cold and very deep.

As they swim a faint glow can be seem as if from another boat or perhaps a camp fire from shore. "There lads" Ta'lor shouts not far at all.  The 3 swim as fast as they can towards the light. an odd sucking sound like the gurgling of a drain can be heard. Before they realize it the 3 have swum into a spinning whirlpool that suck them down and out of sight as they scream.

2 hours later on shore, Gohmen the "Old Timer" walks out to the dock to check his nets. As he walks out onto the wooden wharf he thinks of the warm biscuits and tea Mariam his daughter made for him this morning. He stops for a moment to pick his tooth, when he has a sudden feeling that something is
wrong. He looks around and then it hits him. "It's awfully quiet" he mutters. No lapping of waves on the pilling, no creak of the boats as they roll in the waves against the dock. Looking over the side his jaw drops. He actually rubs his eyes to make sure he is not dreaming. His mouth quivers as
he turns and runs back to the town screaming.
Many of the men are leaving home and have stopped in the town square to talk before heading out for the days fishing. When Gohmen comes running up from
the dock. "It's gone it's gone!!" he cries 'It's gone" one young man grabs his arm asking "What's gone old man?" half laughing.

"The lake , the lake it's gone!"

On the other side of the world. Pet'aa worked feverishly, his arm a blur as he drew out the circle to bring the rains.

Pet'aa had found a cache of books in an underground chamber 5 years ago.  He had been exploring a hole found in the hillside by some shepards, when the floor collapsed and he fell breaking his leg. Looking around in this dark room his hand fell upon a book and then another and then another. He read for years studying, absorbing the writing like a sponge.

"This has to work this time" he mutters it was his 10th try and he only had enough of the minerals left for one more attempt.

Once the circle was complete he sat looking at it for nearly an hour.  The moon was almost at its fullest, There! it is time" He took a deep breath and concentrated.  The words he spoke were in some arcane tongue not heard by anyone for over 10000 years.  The circle glowed, a wind whipped up around the small hill he sat upon at the bottom of the huge desolate valley that his people called home. Surrounded by stark barren cliffs, stony infertile soil and heat stunted brush.

"Please work please work" he pleaded weakened by the drain of all his PPE.

Suddenly a light shot straight up into the sky 100, 200, 300 ft then a great burst of light flashed blinding him for a moment. As he rubbed his eyes a few drops of water fell upon his face then a few more, then more. He cackled with glee dancing a painful jig. The leg hadn't healed correctly so he had a painful limp.

"It worked !" he shouts "It worked!" he glee turned to fear as the torrent from the sky increase to a solid flow of water. As the water washed him down from the hill,  he could not believe the sight before him as he went tumbling down the hill in the torrent of water. There was a river flowing from the sky.
A dark circle of clouds riddled with lighting and a huge river pouring down into the once dry valley.

Unfortunately Pet'aa was unaware of what he had really done, nor did he comprehend the powerful forces he had just unleashed upon the world.  There would soon be many who would seek to learn the lost magics he had found, willing to stop at nothing to obtain that power for themselves.
