The Center of the Square is the main marketplace for the Low Terrace. It should be large (at least 3 room x 3 room) and full of people.
The center of the square will be room 11000, and this may be a recall point. Whether it will be default recall remains to be determined, but it will be a major crossroads of the city. A fancy fountain of some kind should be placed here.
There will be a road from the center square in all four cardinal directions: The docks to the east, the riverside to the south, the main gate to the west, and the Middle Terrace to the north. There may be other alleys or back roads leading to each of these other areas, but the main roads are mandatory. These main roads should be wide and straight, since wagons will move straight to/from the docks and main gate.
There should be shops of all kinds at or near the Square. One suggestion would be for wandering peddler shopkeeper mobs in the square hawking their wares, though this is not a hard-and-fast requirement. Most residential houses will not be near the square, though there may be some. (If anything, they will tend to be incorporated into the shops).
Alleys and beggars' hovels may exist near the square as well. The Low Terrace is where the lower-classes tend to live, but all goods entering or leaving the city pass through here as well, so it is something of a lower-class business district. The roads and blocks of houses immediately surrounding the square will have some back roads and alleys connecting them.
Buildings will be made from wood or brick, and will generally be a bit run-down. Not intolerable conditions at all, but clearly not new buildings either. Rooftops will be mostly flat or at a slight grade; very few steep roofs.
The northern road to the Middle Terrace will end at a "stairway" (haven't decided a good name for it yet). Basically, it is a ramp for wagons and a stairway for pedestrians to go up to the next terrace. Since it is rather steep, there are men and horses who work at pulling wagons up the slope using pulleys. There is a gate that can sealed and defended should the city come under attack, and there will be soldiers present standing guard in that area. (There may be a minor police force throughout the area, but not a heavy presence.. this is another detail that has not yet been decided.) There will be two such stairways between the Low and Middle Terraces; the other will be in the Gateside district.
A separate area will be created for building rooftops for this area. |
