Riverside District (Low Terrace)

The Riverside area is a residential and business district for the Low Terrace. It is a long, narrow section of the city that borders the entire river. It is bounded on the north by the Gateside District (west) and the Corsa Square neighborhoods (east); on the east and west it is bounded by city walls; and on the south it is bounded by the Patnar River and the Water Temple.

At the river, there are several features to be included (from west to east):

  • The River Docks: Although not as grand as the Dockside Sea Port, the river docks are an important location for trade in the city. Goods flow downriver from the west and land at the city here. The Docks are walled off from the rest of the city as a defense against naval attack. There should be at least four piers into the river.
  • The Bridge: Further east, and still outside in the 'partitioned' dock area, there will be a high stone bridge. There is easily enough clearance for any river barge to pass underneath without difficulty, although this makes the arch somewhat steep for wagons to cross (though not greatly difficult). The bridge road leads to the gates into the city (the same entrance to the city as for the Docks). Inside the city walls, the bridge road is wide and straight, leading directly through town toward the center of Corsa Square. Just within the walls on this road, there will probably be at least two Inns ready to welcome new visitors to the city, but this is up to the builder.
  • The Water Temple entrance: Although most of the city is walled off from contact with the river and sea, the corner of the walls separating the Low Terrace from the dock sections has an opening that leads to the Water Temple. The Water Temple's only entrance/exit will be either north or west, so allow the area to be linked in from the southeastern corner of the Riverside area.

Buildings in this area will be made from wood or brick, and will generally be a bit run-down. Not intolerable conditions at all, but clearly not new buildings either. Rooftops will be mostly flat or at a slight grade; very few steep roofs. The Riverside area is long and narrow, but there may be alleys and back roads between the houses and buildings here. The obvious link into other areas will be to the Water Temple and the main road into Corsa Square, but there ought to be alternate back roads and alleyways that lead into the Gateside District and other parts of the Corsa neighborhoods.

The Low Terrace is where the lower-classes tend to live. The "bad" part of town is found in the Dockside section, but the Riverside district has its share of vagrants and low-lifes as well. The condition of streets, houses and buildings ought to reflect this fact, and there should be at least a couple places for the common riverman to drink and gamble away his wages.

Separate areas will be created for building rooftops and sewers for this area.
