The Salura Quarter is the oldest part of the city, founded centuries ago. Standing upon the natural terrace in the hillside, the city spread out from the Salura into the massive metropolis that it is today. The buildings here are very old and built in a distinct, older style, including sloped rooftops and rounded chimneys. The buildings here are somewhat more spread out and less crowded than the rest of the city seems, and the people who live here are friendly and traditional. It is no accident that the Temple of Order and the Temple of Earth are both so close to this part of town. Unlike most of the other districts and parts of the city, Salura has its own wall and gates separating it from the rest of the city; a reminder of what the city once was and how far it has come.
In game terms, the Salura Quarter will be the "Newbie Village" of Xavien's Legacy, and so will be a critical part of the game world. It will be a small city in its own right, with small levelling areas and a basic set of shops (all the essentials). It will be the location at which new characters appear when they are first created. In blunt terms, the idea here is to keep the lowbie area isolated from the rest of the huge city in order to keep newcomers from being overwhelmed. At the same time, it should provide enough of an introduction to the unique facets of XL to maintain the interest of new players... a tall order, but not impossible! :)
A mudschool area will be created separately from the Salura Quarter, but it will be linked to a building in this area. In addition, a future project will include sewer and rooftop areas, which are intended to remain separate from the area itself, but Salura Quarter may be an exception, considering its physical separation from the rest of the city.
The aforementioned levelling areas shouldn't be blatant, and citizens on the street shouldn't be the targets of levelling! Possible suggestions may include exterminating bugs from a basement, stopping animated toys in a toy shop, rooting out a den of thieves, or even an actual practice yard for practicing swordsmanship.
The gate surrounding the city encloses the east and southern ends of the area; the north and west are walled by the hillside itself. The only exit from the city will be to the south, into the Lesan Plaza area, although a gate to the Earth Temple to the east may exist.
Several old families live in this area who have been here literally centuries. They may be a bit snobbish or proud about their place as "old families", but nothing outright rude or unfriendly. Several houses like this might add a lot to the traditional setting.
Buildings will be made from brick or stone, and will generally be
well-maintained, and with the aforementioned distinct style. The buildings here are not cramped together, so the area itself may not be as big as the other areas are expected to be. The goal here is for quality over quantity, even more so here than for other areas.
