Newbie's Guide to Getting Started

Getting started on a MUD whether you are a newbie with no concept of MUD or an advanced player can be a little confusing when dealing with one that has been somewhat-to-greatly modified. The Help section is designed to help you become more acquainted with your surroundings and provide a few additional tips that may come in handy.

If you want to skip the basics of connecting and jump to the section after, click here.

For those of you who are curious as to how you connect to a MUD, you will need a telnet client. Internet Explorer provides a generic telnet client to use if you use a Windows 9x OS. To connect to the mud, click here and it will launch telnet along with the Xavien's Legacy startup.

Since IE's TELNET client does not support ANSI color, type "no" after the prompt "Do you want ANSI color?", and then continue creating your new character. If you want a better client to use than windows TELNET, check out a few of these and see which one is best suited for you:

  • Zmud: Currently one the most popular MUD client. Freeware/Shareware versions are available here.
  • ELF: Fast and user-friendly client. Fully configurable.
  • TinTin: MUD client for Unix users. Requires a Unix shell account.
  • WinTin: Used specifically for playing text-based multi-user dungeons. It is a fully graphical multi-windowed program which will run under Windows 95 or Windows NT.
  • Gmud: Another good MUD client with many useful features.

Basic Commands

Once you have created your character, you can simply typing "help" on the command line of your TELNET client to access a list of preset commands which are generally used on the MUD. To learn more information about other commands, type "help [command name]" (i.e. - help gossip, help score, etc). Here are a list of some useful commands:

  • SCORE - shows your character statistics
  • WHO - shows a list of players and immortals currently online
  • AUTO - toggle automatic commands (autoloot, autogold, autoassist, etc.)
  • CHANNEL - toggles channels
  • SAY - allows you to speak to another person in the same room.
  • TELL - allows you to send messages to other players on the MUD.
  • OOC - this is an open discussion channel for players and immortals

This page will change later to include more information. In the meantime, feel free to contact a Newbie Helper or Immortal on Xavien's Legacy if you have further questions about gettings started.
