MARINER INVITATIONAL 10/19/2002
Mariner Invite was successful for all! Four out of five teams
medalled and personal records were smashed by minutes! It all started out
with the coaches race. John Akstin (father of Kevin and
Laura) led the pack running the 2.1 mile hilly course in 13:50.5, getting second
in a tough age group. Lamar Turner followed with a 15:09.4 earning
himself a third place medal in his age group. Triggs jogged in eventually,
annoying her fellow runners along the way with inane conversation, in a time
good enough to get her a third place in the highly touted 18-29 age group.
Rounding out our "coaches" team was Mr. Suzuki who, under last
minute pressure, jumped on the line with Coach Anderson's number, and learned an
important lesson about pacing. Hopefully tonight his daughter, Stefanie,
will teach him about stretching and icing.
Next up the frosh-soph girls, lead by Sarah Perez,
toed the line. With only five starting, the girls tackled the 2.1 mile
hilly course, most of them running their fastest times ever for ANY 2 mile
course, much less a challenging 2.1 miler with the quarter mile long hill!
There efforts and shortness of breath earned them third place team honors, and
team medals. Tiffany Barclay, alone in the junior varsity girls division
also ran a personal best for ANY 2 mile course, and came in 18th out of 40
contestants in the small school division.
Lisa Marchini, Thea Ricchiuto, and Erin Turner lead newly varsity girls Lmar
Babrak, Julie Crandall, and Elinor Crescenzi to a fourth place medal
performance on a grueling 3.1 mile course packed with rolling hills. All
these girls dropped an insane amount of time, giving the best Salesian
performance at Mariner, despite our number three Pilar Vree feeling under the
weather and a certain freshman having trouble finding the finish line!
The boys frosh-soph lead by Chris Scott and Ehsan
Habib pushed the pace, but sleep (or lack thereof) and donut breakfasts
(that's what I'm blaming!) kept them off the medal stands. The junior
varsity boys surprised themselves, though, with a fourth place medalling
performance. Paul Logston dropped 70 seconds from the previous
year, and David Adams dropped a full two minutes, as well as his lunch on
the finish line (a BIG lunch).
The varsity boys had the largest group improvement, earning
them medal honors. Peder Berthelsen, our second best runner last
year beat his previous time by over two and a half minutes. Xavier
Vivoni, Chris DeCarlo, Keyvan Berenjian, David Brazil, and Rafael Martin
all ran faster than they ever have before on this course, and even besting
Peder's time last year!
