artificial selection
and
survival of the unfit

i started my career in mes in TDMC without any experience in teaching whatsoever and after being in the wilderness for ages. the youngsters tolerated me in spite of me; i am grateful to them.

i remember even getting "negative" compliments from some of my colleagues. my humble feeling is that i was not exactly a big failure in TDMC alleppy and things went smoothly - inspite of me!

back in trivandrum in a college under the same mess and the same university every thing goes topsy turvy. where did it go wrong?

i did not have my father in law nor any god father in alleppey! i was staying in a rented house there as well. i remember mr. ibrahim entrusting the management of his hotel to his wife for the time being and coming with me to look for a house for hire for me to stay! he was just trying to help out an outsider as a normal courtesy. at a later date it was my landlord's son who collected my LPC and sent it to me here in trivandrum. there was nothing i could do for these people in return and they knew it.

during my two years stay in alleppey, no local had made any complaints about me to the police or anybody else. no goonda came to my gate in the dead of the night and abused me. i did not have the local police knocking at my gate at 0330 hrs and never had to exchange vulgar abuses with the police men like i had to with the bastards claiming to be police men from the thiruvnanthapurm medical college police station. why this sharp difference?

as i mentioned earlier, my basic problem is a police man who calls himself a CBI officer and his cronies. one reason could be that they did not have an office in vandanam; but they had their informers as well as the so called "special branch" who will do any of their bidding just for the offal! then why did they not succeed in creating confusion in alleppey.

i feel the difference is in the attitude of the populace. the police man whether he calls himself CBI "officer" or "special branch" or the gestapo for that matter, cannot run amok like he is doing in trivandrum with his prostitute birds and such except with the connivance of the locals. so the problem is with the populace.

the average trivandrumite who was under a monarch till recently, is a slimy, subserviant character; the people here dont believe much in challenging authority. the local police constable is an "emaan" or master! so one can imagine the stature of the CBI police man ("officer") with his expensive dress and costly make up! the long and short of it is that in this place, the police man can get any thing done as well as do anything and get away with it!

the theory of "artificial selection" and "survival of the unfit" came to my mind in the above context.

as a member of the teaching faculty of one of the affiliated colleges of the university, i had a free membership in the kerala university library. but it was a problem getting a certificate from the authorities that i was continuing in the college and as such i could not get the membership renewed and had to forgo the membership. it was a bit of an ego problem; rather than stoop and get the kul membership renewed, i got a paid membership in the british library. and there i read sometime back about survival of the unfit!

the story goes like this - mountain goats with large horns are targeted by hunters as they are considered a more coveted trophy. the result was that the goats with big horns, as the prime target of the hunters, hardly ever lived long enough to reproduce and they died out. the small horned ones on the other hand survived and reproduced and the whole race gradually got changed into small horned ones! in comparison to natural selection which takes eons to show effect, artificial selection becomes obvious in a jiffy.

similar is the story of african elephents. their tusks once upon a time used to weigh upto sixty kilograms. the bigger horned ones got annihilated for obvious reasons and now only small horned ones exist - and there are many hornless ones even!

there is an analogy here with what i presume to have happened in trivandrum. are you getting the point?

i can not only take the horse to the water but can make it drink as well; but i dont want to do it.

i would, however, like to edify the sujathans of medical college trivandrum about an elementary fact from basic anatomy - your anal sphincter is perfectly voluntary.

negative compliments!

in those days one of the lecturers was telling me that the students were impressed because i have a good command over the white man's language. i am glad he told me that the students are impressed (remember the adage, "the proof of the pudding is in the eating"), but i dont agree with the excuse he has put forward to explain it away. could be that i have earned it otherwise, for i am not impressed by my prowess in using the english language! my humble feeling is that the students probably had realised that i care for them and wanted them to do well in life and that didnt exactly make them hate me!

another staff member had once told me that it is not possible for them to refer all sorts of books and make notes and all as, unlike me, they have a family to look after. she was indirectly admitting that i was taking pains that way!

(for your kind information, it is not normal for medical doctors in these areas to compliment their colleagues directly).

you cannot make me stoop

it was a bit of an ego problem - when i as is the usual wont tried to hand over the application for the certificate to the concerned clerk in the princiapl's office, he will not accept it and said that it should come through proper channel. this inspite of the fact the section supdt. had already initialled it. the clerk was technically right there, though no body usually bothers about these minor things, and so i got it forwarded through proper channel. but to collect the certificate i was told i have to go and meet dr.vvvv the clerk concerned, in person. my contention was that if the application was to be sent through proper channel then the delivery should also be effected through proper channel. rather than stoop and get the kul membership renewed, i got a paid membership in the british library.
