The first time Xena & Gabrielle met Celesta she was being held prisoner by a King Sisyphus-who wasn't ready to die yet, he took Celesta's candle away from her and so everywhere in the world death didn't exist, just pain and despair.  Xena & Gabrielle save Celesta but the next time they meet, they're on different sides.
