Eli believed that the way of love was for Gabrielle, when it wasn't.  Gabrielle left the way of love and chose the way of friendship, in order to save Xena's life, which failed though because they ended up being crucified.  Eli using his "gifts," with the help of Angel Callisto, brought Xena and Gabrielle back to life.  His beliefs in Gabrielle of being able to follow the way of love is what cost Gabrielle her life and Xena's, but all was made right after bringing them back to life.
