Characters

William Boone

Police captain William Boone was recruited by the Taelons in the beginning of their fourth year on Earth as their Commander of Security and Interspecies Relations. As a high level Companion agent, Boone was given a CVI and a skrill. However, at the same time Boone was also recruited by the Liberation as a double-agent. Fellow Liberation double-agent Dr. Julianne Belman removed the motivational imperative from his CVI ("Decision"). Boone’s office, located in a federal building, was equipped with such amenities as Taelon virtual glass ("Truth").

Boone had at least one sibling, a younger sister named Sarah who called him Willie ("Through the Looking Glass"). Boone’s father gave him a fishing pole at age 18 and made his son promise that he would teach his own child to fish. Boone gave the pole to Elijah Good’s son in Paradise, Pennsylvania ("Float Like a Butterfly"). Lemon was Boone’s favorite flavor of candy ("Miracle").

Boone had a master’s degree in criminal justice ("Law & Order") and was a consultant for the United Nations in New York City for less than a year ("Old Flame"). Boone was a U.S. Army Ranger ("Horizon Zero"), serving in the ‘01 and SI wars ("Truth"). His best friend Eddie Jordan was his platoon mate in the ’01 War and his best man when he married Kaitlin Barrett ("Decision"). The Boones had been planning to start a family until Kate Boone was murdered by Judson Corr on the orders of Ronald Sandoval in order to change her husband’s decision not to join the Companions ("Decision," "Truth"). Boone subsequently captured the assassin and turned him over to Da’an ("Truth").

Boone had been wary of the Taelons since their arrival, telling his wife, "I don’t trust anyone or anything when I don’t understand what their motivations are and I never will." She replied, "Why can’t you just trust?" ("Decision"). CVI-implanted serial killer James Pike’s told Boone, "You will be their [the Taelons’] [S]aqa[r]ava…Their world is inside the mind they gave you—your implant…When you see, when you know, you will judge them…They are afraid…The sleeper will come" ("Avatar"). Boone’s attitude to at least Da’an seemed to change slightly He told Da’an, "You are a part of us…you are the bridge between our worlds" ("Live Free or Die"). Boone often disagreed with the tactics and motivations of Liberation leader Jonathan Doors, who considered Boone's familiarity with Da'an and the Taelons a detriment to the movement ("The Scarecrow Returns").

As he became used to his CVI, Boone stopped sleeping and hardly ever left his office ("Pandora’s Box"). Boone learned the rudiments of the Taelon language, remarkably well according to Da'an ("The Scarecrow Returns"). The psychic Katya Petrenko may have transferred her gift to Boone, along with information about the ancient Taelon scientist Ma’el ("If You Could Read My Mind"). After receiving Boone’s antibodies to fight off the infection caused by bacteria from the probe, Zo’or’s face exhibited Boone’s features ("Infection").

Boone was severely injured by Ha’gel while trying to convince the alien that they were allies against the Taelons. Boone was ”touch and go” according to Lili; he floated in a liquid-filled container, his body appearing to dissolve when Zo’or touched the glass ("The Joining").

Lili Marquette

Ronald Sandoval assigned shuttle pilot Lili Marquette as William Boone's second-in-command, and Lili subsequently recruited Boone into the Liberation ("Decision").

Lili was 30 years old during the fourth year of the Taelons' residence on Earth. She was born in Ft. Hood, Texas, to Colonel Edward Purcell and Rachel (Marquette) Purcell and baptized at St. Mark's. She had a younger brother named Andy. Edward Purcell was emotionally distant from his children, even requiring them to perform midnight inspections; he was especially hard on his son. Lili was always a comfort to her brother; nevertheless, at the age of nineteen, five years before the Taelon arrival, Andy Purcell shot himself with his father’s Colt 45. His parents found him behind Edward’s desk after returning home from the base club. Lili blamed her father for her brother's suicide and lost her faith because of it. She changed her last name to her mother's maiden name ("If You Could Read My Mind," "The Devil You Know").

Lili trained as a Marine fighter pilot on F-22’s at Valdosta, Georgia. She flew with future astronaut Paul Chandler ("Horizon Zero"). She carried a personal locator built into a cigarette lighter, which bore the Marine motto “Semper Fi” ("Wrath of Achilles"). Lili commanded troops in combat ("Law & Order"), serving in Special Operations and being decorated for her part in the SI War ("The Secret of Strand Hill").

Lili began working for the Taelons sometime in the first three years after their arrival, helping to design the pilot certification program and shield interface for the Taelon shuttles she subsequently flew ("Decision"). She often shuttled Jonathan Doors when he was still CEO of Doors International and involved in Taelon co-ventures ("Law & Order"). She eventually joined Doors' Liberation movement. Lili’s security rating was Level 5; this level was normally reserved for Implants, but her status was changed by Da’an at Boone’s request ("The Joining"). Lt. Siobhan Beckett, Protector to the UK Companion, offered to help Lili further her Companion career (i.e. receive a CVI), but Lili refused ("The Secret of Strand Hill").

Lili and Da'an grew closer when their shuttle crashed in the Appalachian Mountains and they were forced to rely on each other for survival. Da'an subsequently shared his essence with Lili ("Wrath of Achilles"). Lili also discovered that her father, whom she thought had recently died, had actually worked for military intelligence since before her birth and had secretly participated in a Taelon experiment to transfer his mind and memories into a new body because his old one was dying. Lili had been told that her father had retired from the Signal Corps. Purcell, who destroyed Lili's personal locator, was killed during his mission to capture Jonathan Doors for the Taelons ("The Devil You Know").

Joshua Doors, son of Jonathan Doors, met Lili during the Rho-ha trial and invited her to dinner ("Law & Order"). Lili was at first reluctant to begin a serious relationship, but she accepted Joshua's invitation after the death of her friend and Liberation colleague Sahjit Jinnah ("Destruction").

Lt. Beckett, suspicious of Lili's disinterest in receiving a CVI, informed Sandoval that she believed Lili to be a Liberation spy. She subsequently followed Lili to St. Michael's Church, under which lay Liberation headquarters. Before Beckett could present her evidence to the Taelons, she was intercepted and incapacitated by Ha'gel ("The Joining").

Ronald Sandoval

FBI Agent Ronald Sandoval was the law enforcement liaison and Companion Protector to the American Companion Da'an ("Decision").

Sandoval joined the FBI directly after he graduated from law school ("Law & Order"). During the second year of the Taelons' tenure on Earth, they offered Sandoval a chance to work for them as an Implant. He was an "eager supplicant"; both he and his wife Dee-Dee believed in the Taelons. However, Sandoval's willingness to put the Taelons and his career ahead of her angered Dee-Dee ("Sandoval's Run"). After implantation Sandoval began to see Dee-Dee as "infantile," and his motivational imperative caused him to also view her as competing for his attention with Da'an. To eliminate this distraction, Sandoval had Dee-Dee committed and medicated at The Vandewater Institute sanitarium in Restin, Virginia, used by the FBI to hide witnesses and informants. Sandoval eventually placed other "clients" there, too ("Truth," "Sandoval's Run").

Soon after implantation, Sandoval tried unsuccessfully to learn the Taelon language ("The Scarecrow Returns"). Sandoval began to live at Companion Headquarters in Washington D.C. ("Avatar"). He also commanded a team of heavily armed personnel for operations requiring force ("Resurrection"). Sandoval expressed great respect for his skrill, telling Boone that he had received communications from it in the form of dream imagery ("Scorpions Dream"). James Pike stole Sandoval's skrill, but it was soon returned to him ("Avatar"). Sandoval showed great personal concern for Da'an ("Wrath of Achilles"), as well as a deep and tender affection ("Infection"). His attitude toward Zo'or was much more that of a clever, ambitious subordinate ("Destruction").

After William Boone refused Da'an's initial job offer, Sandoval hired Judson Corr to murder Boone's wife Kate. His motivation was twofold: to remove the barrier preventing Boone from acquiescing to Da'an and to save Boone from having to choose between Kate and Da’an once his CVI was implanted. Sandoval believed he was acting compassionately, telling Boone, "We aren’t cut out for love. Not any more" ("Truth"). Several months into Boone's service to the Taelons, Sandoval showed concern, noting that they hadn't really talked in a long time and asking how Boone was adjusting to living alone ("Scorpions Dream"). Sandoval recommended that Boone read Machiavelli’s The Prince in the original Italian ("Pandora's Box").

Midway through the Taelons' fourth year on Earth, Sandoval's CVI began to break down. He initially exhibited bleeding from the ears and agitation ("Live Free or Die"). When the CVI finally became almost completely inoperative, threatening to kill Sandoval, the motivational imperative lost its hold over him. Sandoval revealed that he regretted his ordering of Kate Boone's murder and hated the Taelons for taking away his humanity. In order to save Sandoval's life, Boone was forced to capture him for re-implantation. Boone told Sandoval that he had returned Sandoval's favor of killing Kate by killing Dee-Dee. Sandoval damned him before his new CVI was implanted. After the motivational imperative took hold, Sandoval thanked Boone for his actions, although he also began to wear Dee-Dee's wedding ring on his little finger ("Sandoval's Run").

In Ireland Sandoval met fellow Companion Protector Lt. Siobhan Beckett. She expressed a physical attraction to Sandoval, which he rebuffed. Yet Sandoval appeared intrigued by Beckett, whose style of serving the Taelons was so different from his own. Beckett challenged him by asking, "Who are you underneath your CVI?" Sandoval had no answer ("The Secret of Strand Hill").

Sandoval again worked with Beckett while pursuing Ha'gel. Beckett revealed that her Runic divination implied that they were destined to come together, whether he liked it or not. This prophecy was fulfilled, albeit indirectly, when Ha'gel took on Sandoval's likeness and knowledge, using Sandoval's body to impregnate Beckett. Ha'gel asked the incapacitated Sandoval, "I wonder what your Taelon friends would say if they knew the secrets you keep buried" ("The Joining").

Augur

Augur was the “ultimate home entrepreneur,” using his computer hacking skills to steal money and other assets. His secret lair was located in a computer parts warehouse that he owned. Augur had worked with William Boone while Boone was a police captain ("Truth").

Unbeknownst to Boone, Augur was a member of the Liberation, having been part of it longer than even Lili Marquette, who was also at first unaware of his involvement ("Resurrection").

Augur’s true passion was his art collection, including at least one stolen painting. This collection was housed in the home of Augur's friend, the psychic Marie ("If You Could Read My Mind").

Augur designed a computer virus to undermine the Taelon network and highlight its vulnerability to the people of Earth. When the virus proved uncontrollable, Augur's conscience caused him great concern over the fact that people might die because of his creation ("Wrath of Achilles").

Augur expressed his attraction and possible deeper feelings for Lili Marquette on several occasions ("If You Could Read My Mind").

Jonathan Doors

Jonathan Doors was the CEO of Doors International and a partner of the Taelon Synod until he faked his own assassination in order to lower his profile so that he could lead the Liberation movement that he had founded ("Decision").

When he faked his death, Doors International was worth $32 billion ("Decision"). One of the company's assets was a satellite assembly plant in North Platte, Nebraska ("Resurrection"). At the time of Doors' apparent death his company was poised to enter a joint venture with the Taelons to create a "forum where human minds [could] absorb Taelon concepts in order to better [Earth]" ("Decision"). Doors had begun his career as an engineer in a nuclear power plant ("The Scarecrow Returns").

Doors claimed that when he refused to take part in the Taelons' experiments at Futurity Farm, owned by Doors International, the Taelons placed him on a ‘hit list.' This may have precipitated Doors' creation of the Liberation, and it certainly spurred his plan to fake his own death ("Resurrection"). Doors said, "We’ve become sheep, and I don’t like the shepherds…[the Taelons are] complex, duplicitous, and nothing about them is ever what it seems" ("Decision," "Truth"). Doors also suspected that the Taelon homeship was hidden in orbit of the moon ("Horizon Zero").

Doors recruited Augur, Dr. Julianne Belman, Eddie Jordan and Lili Marquette, whom he had met when she shuttled him for the Taelons, into the Liberation ("Law & Order"). At first the Liberation met at the Flat Planet Café ("Miracle"). But after Doors revealed himself and announced the existence of the Liberation to the public, the Liberation moved to its new headquarters, for which Doors had paid, beneath St. Michael's Church ("Resurrection"). Doors continued to finance the Liberation with money he siphoned from Doors International ("The Devil You Know"). The capture (or killing) of Jonathan Doors became a high priority for the Taelons, especially Zo'or ("Resurrection," "The Devil You Know").

The Liberation leader stated that he would use "any means necessary to ensure the liberation of humanity" ("Resurrection"). This philosophy often led him into conflict with William Boone, who was disturbed by Doors' extremist views and tactics and his unwillingness to try to understand the Taelons on their own terms ("The Scarecrow Returns," "Wrath of Achilles"). Doors stated rather disdainfully that it was too bad that Dr. Belman couldn't fix Boone's CVI so that he would serve only Doors ("Truth"). Doors also came into conflict with Lili Marquette more frequently after Boone joined the Liberation ("Scorpions Dream"). Consequently, Doors ordered Dr. Park to reengineer the alien bacteria that infected Lincoln Hills into a biological weapon against the Taelons without telling other members of the Liberation ("Infection").

Doors had a son: attorney Joshua Doors. Their relationship was quite distant; Doors never even mentioned Jpshua to Lili Marquette. However, the elder Doors had assigned Willie Collier to be his son's bodyguard while he still ran Doors International ("Law & Order"). Dr. Belman may have been Doors' only real emotional attachment. The way that Dr. Belman placed her hand on Jonathan's shoulder and their tone of conversation when he first brought her to Liberation headquarters suggested that they might be more than colleagues ("Resurrection").

Da’an

Da’an was the American Companion whose headquarters were located in Washington D.C. Da'an saw the visionary quality in William Boone and offered him the position as Head of Security and Interspecies Relations ("Decision").

Da’an said, "Since my young days, visions of starspace have filled my awareness, dreams that one day I might grasp at the jewel of a distant world" ("Decision"). Upon the Taelon arrival on Earth, Da'an led the search for Ma'el's research ("The Secret of Strand Hill").

Despite Jonathan Doors' insistence to the contrary, Da'an told Boone, "I have never ordered the death of your wife." It appeared that Sandoval's murder of Kate Boone was his own idea. Sandoval told Boone that Da'an wished to study individuals like Kate's killer, Judson Corr ("Truth").

Da'an was apparently a member of the Taelon ruling body, the Synod ("Truth"), in addition to being the American and United Nations Companion. When the Synod was displeased with the fact that Jonathan Doors had apparently faked his death and formed the Liberation on Da'an's watch, it replaced Da'an with Zo'or. However, Da'an was reinstated with the help of Boone, who told Da'an, "You have a deeper understanding of humanity" ("Resurrection"). There was some degree of hostility between Da'an and Zo'or.

Da'an was kidnapped by U.S. military personnel and held for ransom, the ransoms being the release of the soldiers' compatriots who they believed were being held by the Taelons. Da'an began to allow himself to die in order to escape his captors, but was rescued at the last minute by Sandoval and Boone. Boone told Da'an, "You are a part of us…you are the bridge between our worlds" ("Live Free or Die"). Da'an brought his injured jailor, Capt. Lucas Johnson, to a hospital in hopes that Johnson could be saved ("Pandora's Box").

When the Synod came to believe that North America was a more difficult arena than it had anticipated, it replaced Da'an as the Companion representative to the United Nations with Zo’or ("The Secret of Strand Hill").

When their shuttle was disabled by Augur's anti-Taelon computer virus, Da'an and Lili had to depend on one another for survival and thus grew closer. After they were rescued, Da'an shared his essence with Lili ("Wrath of Achilles").

Da'an again faced death when he was infected with the alien bacteria at Lincoln Hills. He, along with the rest of the Taelons and humanity, were saved using Boone's antibodies. Da'an had earlier saved Boone's life by restarting his heart ("Infection").

Julianne Belman

Dr. Julianne Belman worked closely with the Taelons and as Jonathan Doors' attending physician. Belman's duties included the implantation and maintenance of CVIs. She was also a member of the Liberation ("Decision").

Dr. Belman worked for a company called Comtech and was involved in the "experiment in rehabilitation" during the Taelons' second year on Earth in which serial killer James Pike became the first human to receive a CVI, his having the MI to "love humankind." Two years later, when Pike's CVI began to break down, Pike kidnapped Belman and forced her to alter his CVI so that he could fire Sandoval's skrill ("Avatar"). After her rescue Belman worked, unsuccessfully, to understand why the CVIs broke down and how to fix them ("Sandoval's Run").

The doctor had also developed a technique for transferring thoughts between two hardwired brains and used it to transmit Katya Petrenko's knowledge into William Boone's mind with his CVI serving as a modulation device ("If You Could Read My Mind").

Dr, Belman also helped develop the antibodies to fight the alien bacteria that struck Lincoln Hills, New Hampshire ("Infection").

There was a photograph of a man* on Dr. Belman's desk ("Old Flame"), but when Jonathan Doors introduced Belman to the new Liberation headquarters and asked how long she could stay, she touched his shoulder in a way that suggested they could be more than simply colleagues ("Resurrection").

* This man was, of course, Earth: Final Conflict's creator Gene Roddenberry, actress Majel Barrett-Roddenberry's late husband.

Sahjit Jinnah

Dr. Sahjit Jinnah was one of the Taelon's first researchers at Comtech ("Through the Looking Glass") and was also a member of the Liberation ("The Scarecrow Returns").

The scientist met his fiancé Rayna Armitraj while studying at the Sorbonne in Paris. They had to wait two years before they were reunited while working at Liberation headquarters. Rayna was tragically disintegrated and replicated by the probe, but Sahjit theorized that her DNA might still be preserved within the probe's computer memory ("The Scarecrow Returns").

Sahjit volunteered to play guinea pig to discover the true nature of the Taelon Portal Project. He was redirected to the Taelon facility on the moon and subsequently revealed to them as probably working with Jonathan Doors. However, Da'an helped Sahjit escape from Sandoval and Zo'or ("Through the Looking Glass").

Sahjit's theory about Rayna was apparently proved correct when she contacted Augur to warn him that the Taelons were about to extract the probe's memory banks. Sahjit was killed in the attempt to destroy the probe and rescue Rayna, although Rayna herself survived in a probe-replicated mechanical body ("Destruction").

Siobhan Beckett

Lt. Siobhan Beckett was the Companion Protector to the United Kingdom Companion ("The Secret of Strand Hill").

Beckett was part of an anti-terrorism unit in the Belfast militia before receiving her CVI. Beckett assisted Sandoval, Boone and Lili in the search for Ma'el's remains in Ireland. Beckett was the first female Implant that Sandoval had ever met, and he wondered if a woman could serve the Taelons as effectively as a man; Beckett proved that indeed they could. She also expressed a physical attraction to Sandoval, which he was unwilling to acknowledge or reciprocate. When Beckett asked Sandoval, "Who are you beneath your CVI," Sandoval had no answer ("The Secret of Strand Hill").

As an Implant, Beckett made good use of her intuitive powers, which she claimed had "never been sharper since the implantation of [her] CVI" ("The Secret of Strand Hill"). She cast Runes as a divinatory practice to enhance that intuition ("The Joining").

Beckett offered to help Lili Marquette further her Companion career by sponsoring her for implantation, but Lili refused ("The Secret of Strand Hill"). This aroused Beckett's suspicions and led her to the conclusion that Lili was a Liberation spy. After accompanying the UK Companion to the U.S. and staying to assist with the capture of Ha'gel, Beckett followed Lili to St. Michael's Church, where she uncovered evidence of Liberation headquarters. However, before she could report her findings to Zo'or or Sandoval, she was intercepted by Ha'gel in Sandoval's body. Ha'gel impregnated the lieutenant, thus fulfilling her Runic prophecy that she and Sandoval were destined to come together whether he liked it or not. Lili took the unconscious Beckett into Liberation headquarters and told Sandoval that she had been killed by Ha'gel ("The Joining").

Joshua Doors

Joshua Doors was the estranged son of Jonathan Doors. Despite their distant relationship and the fact that Joshua did not really know his father, Jonathan Doors demonstrated his love for Joshua by assigning him Willie Collier as a bodyguard ("Law & Order").

Joshua, at 31 years old, was the youngest New York City district attorney in history. Despite his apparent support for the Taelons, he decided to prosecute Rho-ha for the murder of Major McIntyre because he believed it was necessary to demonstrate that the Taelons were also subject to the law. During the trial, Joshua was almost killed by a fanatical Taelon supporter. He was saved by the sacrifice of Willie Collier and went on to win the case ("Law & Order").

Following Joshua's success on the Rho-ha case, U.S. President Thompson appointed him to the newly created cabinet-level position of Secretary of Human-Taelon Relations. In this capacity Joshua visited the Taelon homeship and met with Quo'on in order to voice some of President Thompson's concerns over recent actions by the Taelons. Zo'or and Sandoval were angered by Joshua's disdain for the Taelons' mystique, and Zo'or felt that he could be a major impediment to the Taelon agenda. The two of them, therefore, planned to assassinate Joshua ("Destruction").

Joshua invited Lili Marquette to dinner when they met to discuss her testimony in the Rho-ha case ("Law & Order"). He subsequently invited her to attend a White House function in the Rose Garden. At first she refused, but changed her mind about beginning a serious relationship after the death of her friend Sahjit Jinnah ("Destruction").
