GLOCK 18 |
GLOCK FAMILY A very popular civilian and police handgun, the Glock is used been many agencies around the world. The Glock 17 was the one that started it all. Made of polymer, this "plastic" gun was succesfully introduced in 1983 by Gaston Glock. Glock pistols at first were known to be very controversial during its release in the United States. Afraid that this "plastic" handgun would be able to pass through metal detectors (Glocks, in reality, has 70% metal in it), Congress actually tried to get it banned. After being unsuccessful, the Glock became very popular among law enforcement and civilians. I myself own a Glock 17. One of the first law enforcement agencies to adopt the Glock 17 was the Miami Police Department. Other agencies using the Glock handguns are the D.C. Metro Police, FBI, DEA, U.S. Marshal's Service. SIG SAUER SERIES The first Sig pistol that was introduced was the SIG P210 and was quickly adopted by the Swiss military. In 1975, Sig began production and marketing of a new pistol, the Sig 220. After its introduction, the Swiss military replaced their Sig 210s for the Sig 220. The first U.S. law enforcement agency to adopt the Sig 220 was the Huntington Beach Police Department (Orange County, CA). The FBI once used the 9mm SIG 228 as their sidearm, but in 1998 they switched to the Glock 22/23. The U.S. Air Force adopted the SIG M11 (228) as their sidearm. Other agencies using the SIG SAUER guns are the IRS, DSS, FAA Air Marshal's, Secret Service, and Army CID. |
