Wufei Chang
"The Solitary Dragon"... Wufei is the proud Chinese Gundam pilot that we all know. Well, this bio is gonna be biased, cause' Wufei is the Gundam pilot that I respect the most. Well, we begin in the year A.C. 194, at the colony A02026. Wufei, then a scholarly boy that studies and never wanted to know what "justice" was and he did not acknowledge fighting. The heirs of the long clan were to marry at the age of 14, and Wufei's wife was the granddaughter of Ron Shirin, Meirian. She was always talking about justice and said that Wufei should fight for it. She also thought that she was reincarnation of another famous Chinese female warrior, Nataku. (However, being Chinese, I've never heard of a Nataku... Maybe it's just Romanized and pronounced wrong or something.) Wufei allowed her to think like that, but he didn't belive in anything that she said. But, when General Septem of the Alliance Space Force decides to demolish the aging colony with biological weapons, Trieze sends a squad of Specials to the colony to try to get rid of it without biological warfare. When the Specials arrive at the colony, Meirian took a reconstructed Tallgeese and entered combat with the Specials troops. But she could not handle the suit very well, and the Specials were taking the upper hand. At that time Wufei did not belive in justice but he couldn't just watch his wife being killed. So he took the yet uncompleted Shenlong and took care of the Specials. Sally Po then told General Septem that the colony has been destoryed, meaning that the colony would be left alone for a while.
But when Wufei gets back, he finds that Meirian has been mortally wounded in battle, he finally acknowledges that she's Nataku, and she smiles and says that perhaps he is and not her. But Wufei says that she is, and she dies in his arms. (What a sad scene... ;_;) Then he screams, "Nataku!!!!!" And then agrees to Master O that he will pilot the Gundam Shenlong in Operation Meteor to find out what justice is and also names the Gundam in honor of Meirian, Nataku. Which is why he is always talking to Nataku and stuff, because he thinks Meirian lives on in Shenlong. She was probably the only female that he's respected and loved.
In Operation M, Wufei, like all of the other Gundam pilots, go to the Earth to attack major OZ and Alliance facilities. One mission that he went on was to destory the new Taurus Space Mobile Suits at the Lake Victoria Military Academy. After blowing up the pilot trainee dormitory to cause a distraction, he takes off but is pursued by an instructor at the academy, Lucrezia Noin. But seeing the pilot of the Gundam was only about 14 or 15, she underestimated Wufei and he had the time to get to Nataku and successfully blows up a carrier of Tauruses. However, he spared Noin because he doesn't kill women and children. Wufei was also successful in predicting Operation Daybreak when the Gundam pilots attacked the New Edwards Base, and he did not join the attack that benifited to OZ, and it was Wufei that informed Heero that he just killed all of the Alliance's pacifists. I think he did not join in the initial battle because we never hear of him until the end of the episode. So he was correct in predicting that. But he did help the other Gundam pilots trying to escape from the New Edwards Base. He and Trowa battled the OZ forces offshore and he went to kill Trieze. Trieze then challenged him to a duel, and thinking he would kill him then, Wufei accepted. But this time Wufei underestimated Trieze, and Trieze beat him. Afterwards he promised that if Trieze didn't kill him then, he'll keep coming back to get Trieze. He also thought that he wasn't worthy to Meirian or Nataku after he's been defeated by someone more powerful then him and he came up with the conclusion that he could only fight those weaker than him. So now you know why he keeps talking about the "strong" and "weak". And so he did not join the other Gundam pilots in their mission to destory the Tauruses heading to Siberia, saying that he wasn't worthy to pilot the Nataku.
But in episode 12 he goes back to China and finds the country in a turmoil after Colonel Bunto of the Alliance took over. There was also a rebel faction there to oppose the Alliance, and Wufei helps them out there a bit. But since he thought he was unworthy of piloting the Nataku, he couldn't fight them directly. But Sally Po helps Wufei out, and tells him that they need the Gundam because they are weak and they needed someone strong to back them. So Wufei now understands and he helps the weak. He then destory the OZ forces that were sent to China and Colonel Bunto's forces. Here was another woman he respected. He then also went to space with the other Gundam pilots. There he went on several missions, including attacking the Space Fortress Barge. But the Gundam Nataku was seriously damaged after the battle, and OZ captured it by the Lunar Base. But the 5 Gundam engineers got a hold of the Gundam and attempted to upgrade it. The result was the awesome "New Nataku", the Gundam Altron. With the Altron and the new Deathscythe Hell, Wufei and Duo break out of the Lunar Base. Wufei then goes to his home colony A02026 and trains there.
Afterwards, the Romefeller Foundation finds out that the Gundam 05 is at the colony and decides to attack it. During the battle, Long Shirin decided not to distract Wufei with the colony and detonated the entire colony. Wufei, upset after the event, blamed it all on war and OZ. He strived harder than ever to find this justice. When the White Fang rebeled, Wufei noted that they were just like OZ and the weak shouldn't be fighting or else they'd get carried away when they have strength. So that's why he decided to join Heero and the other Gundam pilots. (With a little help from Wing Zero.) After the defeat of the White Fang and also after the duel with Trieze, Wufei still wasn't satisfied with the way things are, and decided to join the Mariemeia Army because he still hasn't figured out what justice really is. He is also haunted by memories of Trieze because in their final duel, he did not expect to win, and he thought Trieze had gone easy on him. There were still many questions in his head.
But in the year A.C. 196, while the Mariemeia Army rebelled, Wufei looked to Heero for a long discussion for answers. So in their two duels, Wufei wanted to know what Heero and the other Gundam pilots were doing, and if that was the right path or not. In their second duel, Wufei said that he joined the Mariemeia Army because that's where soldiers like himself have gathered and he didn't like Relena's plan of just throwing away weapons. But Heero made Wufei realize that if another war would take place, another accident like what happened to A02026 would happen. Wufei didn't want that. So in the end he ended up helping the other Gundam pilots in a helpful way. He decleared that he has found what justice was and he was done fighting, thus ending his battle with Trieze. Then after the war, he goes with Sally Po to become a preventer. (What goes on between those two we'll never know... ^_^) Also, if you want to learn about Wufei, watch the series about 15 or 20 times though and listen to his image songs and you'll understand him. ^_^ In conclusion, I don't think that he's the arrogant and woman-hating people make him out to be. And he doesn't just rant on and on about justice and integrety for nothing. People who think he's like that obviously don't understand the series well. Oh well... this has been a loooonnnggg bio... Well, I have an essay on Wufei that would be something good to read in case you still don't understand. Read it here. ^_^
