New Zealand are the big movers of the March 2004 rankings moving up five places to third after good series wins over Pakistan and South Africa. Sri Lanka climbed three places despite losing their series against Australia 3-2 because Australia's lead over Sri Lanka in the rankings meant they were expected to win more strongly. Despite this, Australia still increased its overall ranking thanks to a clean sweep over India and Zimbabwe in the VB Series.
Eleven new nations joined the table following two World Cup qualifying tournaments for affiliate nations, one in Africa and the other in the Americas. Botswana and Bahamas won the respective tournaments and proceed to the next stage of regional qualifying.
