Deeply traumatized by Mulder's 'return' in This is not Happening, and still reeling from his earlier blink-and-you'll-miss-him appearance in Per Manum, I'd like to start off by saying that never in my wildest nightmares could I have imagined a scene as devoid of even the tiniest spark of originality as the one that gave us the legally required minimum dialogue between two consenting adults about to engage in the process of procreation - a scene so lacking in grace and style, in emotional as well as actual plot-related content, it had me gaping at the screen in sheer disbelief. There's nothing to be said against valiant efforts being undertaken to keep the tension *alive*, but I'm afraid this pathetic excuse for a pivotal moment of platonic passion could quite possibly have murdered what mystery may still have lingered in the Mulder-Scully partnership, and (aside from the fact that the arrival of a child will change things irrevocably for everyone involved) no ever-so-sensitive "I wouldn't want this to come between us" could hope to salvage the situation. Anticlimactic, in every sense of the word. Not only are we witnessing the deliberate dismantling of what used to be a if not THE most outstanding character combination in recent years, but on top of that we are being treated to some of the worst cliches not seen since the good old days of season one, when we could have accepted the faux pas of two characters telling each other 'secrets' they should have known for years as a means of supplying the audience with vital pieces of information. But sadly, in the case of Scully's 'inability to conceive', and Mulder's actions to preserve her ova there was no need to inform the audience of anything: those *facts* have been in the public domain, as it were, ever since they were introduced in seasons two, four and five, and the waste of precious air time is all the more irritating since no further use is made of the information given - other than that of establishing Scully's rather sudden desire for motherhood and Mulder's equally as unmotivated eagerness to comply with her 'request'. Of course, Scully's maternal instincts and Mulder's propensity for procreation become a little clearer in light of last season's virtually impossible cliffhanger scenario that left us with a missing Mulder and an inexplicably pregnant Scully - which, in turn, left Mr Carter and his creative team in the acutely uncomfortable position of having to provide an after-the-fact explanation for her condition. Whereas under normal circumstances one would of course expect things to work the other way round. But circumstances are far from normal for Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The solution Mr Carter and his colleagues came up with is as brilliant as it is blatantly self-evident: simply rewrite seven years of television history, and – hey presto! – everything will make perfect sense again. After all, this is the X Files, and leaps in time and logic aren't exactly unheard of. It's a fact that excellent use has in the past been made of various gaps and lapses. However, this latest after-the-fact revelation is hardly the kind of leap that allows the plot to move forward, or which intrigues us with the thrill of...infinite possibilities concerning what has been said or done in our absence. More than anything, it is an exercise in damage limitation, aiming to reverse past decisions the consequences of which are proving too daunting, too revealing or – with regard to Scully's pregnancy - too difficult to handle within the narrow confines of 'reality' as we know it. Twisting the boundaries of time and space is the prerogative of any work of fiction. Nevertheless, persistent abuse of those privileges will eventually erode the audience's willingness to suspend their disbelief indefinitely, especially if 'reality' keeps being reinvented time and again: instead of adding new pieces to the puzzle, the 'facts' presented this season are threatening to render meaningless seven years of character growth and a common history that both the show and the fans alike have shared. Mr Carter has referred to this technique as 'pulling the rug from under people's feet', and he has expressed his delight at our perplexed reactions. Having suffered through the rug-pulling extravaganza that has been season eight so far, I do no longer share Mr Carter's enthusiasm for blithely creating faits accomplits whenever a narrative dead end has been reached. And the most devastating dead end this season has been the Mulder-Scully tragedy. continued from previous.... Over seven seasons, our imagination was constantly being tickled by the very vagueness of their private lives. Somehow I'm not convinced reducing this slow, deliberate seven-year tease to a mere thirty-second cliche will do anyone any favours, least of all the two characters involved. It will also come as a major disappointment to an ever-active, ever-resourceful fan community, who have grown used to the idea of a wide range of competing interpretations existing peacefully next to each other. Any attempt on the part of the show's own writers to define the Mulder-Scully relationship is doomed to fail - simply because any attempt to 'explain' a mystery will destroy the very mystery it is attempting to explain. The sad thing about a 'definitive' version being of course that it is precisely that: definitive. Unequivocal. Final. As long as the relationship remained an undercurrent, always present but never explicitly dramatized, we were free to draw our own conclusions. That freedom has now been taken away from us, and I cannot for the life of me imagine how such a (self-) restrictive, stifling move is supposed to boost interest in either the show or its characters beyond the quick fix of a short-lived ratings peak. Aside from the relationship disaster, season eight has failed to deliver in more ways than one. Its very existence, to my mind, is a contradiction in terms: it was only a few months ago that I still felt safe in my conviction that a continuation of the series with its main character missing would not only be unwise but also quite simply unthinkable. Time and Mr Carter have taught me otherwise. Still, fool that I am, I allowed myself to hope against hope that the much-publicised promises about Mulder forming the 'absent centre' of the show's eighth season would at least be honoured. Promises that, I might add, were given only after the highly controversial campaign that claimed the new line up would make us forget Mulder failed to achieve the desired effect. Ah, but I was wrong again. And now that Mulder has been restored to us, my excitement at the oh-so happy event is considerably dampened - seeing that far from celebrating our hero's homecoming, This is Not Happening had an agenda of its own to serve: for not only did Mulder's 30-second re-appearance cause viewing figures to soar, in doing so it also secured maximum exposure for the latest 'cast addition', who, rather conveniently, happened to be making her debut that very same night. While our hero's life-in-death return may be a well-made cliffhanger in the classic XF tradition, its cosy familiarity could also be its greatest flaw, and the tentative suggestion that perhaps Fox William Mulder has already been dead one time too many is only one possible explanation for our less then enthusiastic response this time. There was a period when the summer hiatus actually made us hold our collective breath. When the series format requirements were compatible with the 'natural' narrative rhythms of the story that was being told. Now the show's rhythms - and other, much more *natural* ones - have been ruthlessly twisted out of shape to conform with the more rigid and more easily predictable patterns of the the sweeps calendar - without any regard to how radically the shift is undermining the crediblity of the show and its characters. In earlier seasons finding the protagonist alive after the customary...creative break would have been a prerequisite for the continuation of any story line. Now the question of whether Mulder lives or dies is barely touching the concerns of the surviving characters, and their newly-forged alliances. Years ago, the Search for Mulder would have been a game, a tease, as was the case with his (albeit badly resolved) 'suicide' at the end of season four: we took the bait and we enjoyed the tease because we felt safe in the knowledge that the status quo would be restored eventually. This time, however, his torture, 'death' and subsequent resurrection are anything but a gentle tease. By presenting Mulder's ominous absence as just another routine occurence in the ever-elusive 'Greater Scheme of Things', it merely succeeds in prolonging our agony and denying Mulder the courtesy of a dignified departure. If there is one pattern that's been emerging of late, it is the increasing irrelevance of Fox Mulder: what more could he possibly hope to achieve after this season? He's been abducted, he's been tortured, he's beed dead and buried, the Conspiracy is in tatters, Samantha has been 'found', and Scully has a new partner. She's also pregnant, but her pregnancy too is proof of the fact that The X Files as we knew it no longer exists. Mulder's quest, the one defining and uniting theme is long since gone, and it is only a matter of time before the (former) hero himself will finally be made redundant. His 'return', therefore, can only grant a temporary reprieve from the growing deadlock that has already sent much of season eight into a state of paralysis, both physical (Mulder 'progresses' through various stages of immobility from being held captive by his alien tormentors to the ultimate Freudian nightmare of being buried alive) and temporal (no clear time frame has materialized as yet in which to place events and developments chronicled in season eight). Not only do we seem to be stuck in some kind of eternal present tense, in most of the scenes involving Mulder we have actually been moving backwards in time, and it's highly unlikely his re-animation (!) will reverse that trend and present us with a bright future for the new/old hero. Mulder is virtually brought back from the dead to do, well, what exactly? His creator admits, "he'll be somewhat hobbled by what's been done to him", but Mulder's somewhat delapidated state fits in quite well with his plans for the continuation of the show. In Mr Carter's immortal words, "he's going to be a third wheel, if you will" (LA Times). There was a time when 'Fox Mulder' and 'The X Files' were virtually synonymous. Not any more, apparently. There was a time when The X Files used to set the standards, when it captured our imagination with unique character creations, intriguing stories and innovative ways of telling them. Now it's sadly lagging behind a variety of second-generation copies and third-rate competitors, desperately trying to catch up: manlier men, scarier monsters, more inane dialogue and gratuitous violence, plus a new, improved Uber-Scully: all woman in her twelfth (real-time) month of prengancy, and still showing off her slim waist and black lace bra, while her ineffectual ex-partner is orbiting the planet in a flying saucer, stark naked and strapped into a sadistic dentist's chair. Maybe it's just me but I can't shake the impression that what we're witnessing here is a sad travesty of what used to be one of the most creative, one of the most *intelligent* shows on television. This is not happening. Indeed. "How will they remember us?" Poor Mulder's anxious question in Hollywood AD seems eerily prophetic now that season eight has come to pass. One would hope, though, that our image of 'Mulder and Scully' was established long before it was decided that in order for the show to have a future it would become necessary to assassinate its characters and rewrite its past. |

Your Comments: | I completely agree that the Files should move on to a film franchise which David has expressed he would like to be a part of. The Files is simply on the air now for money- it is the highest rated steady-running show that Fox has and it's not ready to let go of that moolah. David is absolutely right to want to walk away from a character he has been playing for years (oh, the dredgery for an actor). Mulder made the X-files and I'm disappointed that they are going on, not for the show itself or for Chris' vision, but because of money. It's sad. |

Your Comments: | I was very struck with the clarity of the case presented by the website for a better treatment of Mulder's character. There was no shrillness in presenting their case or haranguing of the show's writers and producers - just a simple, dignified appeal. I'm one of those who will not be watching unless the Mulder/Scully dynamic is there. Carter et al may delude themselves into believe that it was the monster-of-the-week plots that have given the show its following, but for me and many like me it was the character dynamics. And however they might wish to deny it, Mulder's was the most quirky, charming, passionate and engaging characters the medium has produced. He'll be remembered long after the attempts to replace him - or the attempts to downplay the significance his character has had. He was and is the soul and passion of the show. |

Your Comments: | I agree totally! It hurts to see Doggett rescuing Scully and solving x-files with her.Doggett would be a fine addition to the show but not instead of Mulder.I wouldn't think Scully's character would turn out to be so shallow and heartless as to forget all about Mulder so fast.Mulder should leave the show a winner and keep all us Philes' hearts happy. |

Your Comments: | I AGREE THAT THE X-FILES IS SAD AND HOLLOW WITHOUT THE PRESENCE OF FOX MULDER. I UNDERSTAND THAT DAVID, THE ACTOR, WANTED TO MOVE ON AND DO OTHER THINGS. IN THESE I WISH HIM WELL, JUST KNOW THAT THE LAST TIME I FELT THIS STRONGLY ABOUT LOSING SOMEONE WAS THE DAY THAT JOHN LENNON DIED. SOME MAY SAY THERE IS NO COMPARISON OF THE TWO, BUT TO ME THE PRESENCE OF FOX MULDER IN THE X-FILES AND THE PRESENCE OF JOHN LENNON IN THE MUSIC WORLD WILL ALWAYS BE DEEPLY MISSED. |

Your Comments: | Mulder IS the x-files. I repect DD's choice to leave, but without Mulder, there is no show, IMHO. He has been the most interesting character on television, and I cannot imagine continuing to watch without him. I only wish his character could continue in fiction, much the way the original members of Star Trek continued their lives in published fiction. I want to watch Fox Mulder develop and age, learn and grow. He is a hero. How can the x-files be the x-files without his heroic quest. No Mulder, No X-files! Pat |

Your Comments: | David and Gillian have left a legacy behind them. I feel CC and Co. should cherish this wonderful partnership that has come out of the equally wonderful show. Mulder and Scully belong together. They are a 2 people combined to make one. When The X-Files started one could only hope for the rersults that have followed its debut way back in 1993. Part of that has come from the excellent chemistry between David and Gillian. Mulder and Scully have been through hell and back for each other the past 7 years. If the show should continue on past 8 fabulous seasons it should be with none or both. Mulder nor Scully should be forgotten. I feel if ones goes so does the other. For years they have fought the good fight. They may not have completely won but what matters is that they did it together. CC and Co. should to rerspect the fans' feelings toward the characters and let them BOTH bow out gracefully. |

Your Comments: | I tuned in to the X-files last night, and did not notice at first what was wrong. I felt something was amiss. I noticed straight away that Mulder was missing, and the there was a cop type of person with Scully. I thought he was one of the straight, dumb FBI types that Mulder and Scully always had to deal with. I couldn't believe it when I was told that this was the new Mulder. The x-files ceases to exist as the basic cocept that it was based upon has been removed. They can do what they like, without Mulder it is not that I will justnot be watching, it is that there is no x-files to watch. Sam |

Your Comments: | My wife and I have been fans of the Xfiles since the series premiere. I believe a true Xfiles fan will agree that the heart and soul of this show is Mulder. The show is about his quest, his conviction, dedication and loyalty. That is the truth of the show. While Mulder and Scully should always go hand and hand and as much as I love the character of Scully, the character of Mulder is our favorite. We don't want to choose, we think it should end now with them together. We will not watch another season without Mulder...the Xfiles will have died in our hearts unfortunately and that is a terrible thing to happen to what was once a great show and our favorite. |

Your Comments: | Scully and no Mulder? I'm sorry to say, as much as I adore Scully, it just doesn't add up. Mulder is the show. Without Mulder there would be no show. I was thrilled when the X-Files began, young as I was, because for once we had a smart, sensitive, empathic man who TV who wasn't diminished by his equally intelligent and empathic female partner. It was refreshing. It's getting tired now. I'm not interested in Doggett. I'm sure he's a nice character and all, but Mulder's the one I want to see. I for one will stop watching the X-Files if David doesn't return. David has every right to back out, and I hope you folks at 1013 have the sense to see when enough is enough. I cannot recall the last time I wanted one of my favourites show to end, but I do now. Give them some peace, boys. |

I think Fox are mad continuing the X-Files for another Season and without Mulder, what are they thinking?? The show should end with diginity and have a finale that will be remebered not just trail on into oblivion for extra season after season. Without Mulder there is no X-Files, he is central to the show. |

Now we know what is the main objective in Mulder´s life, but... what should we consider the main objective in Scully´s life?, Her love for Mulder?????, The quest of the Truth?, Which truth?..... I don´t know but i think that CC feels envy of Mulder, finally, Mulder is bigger than he is, so, CC is using his "power" to destroy Mulder...... and Scully too. |

Your Comments: | I've written a message before the season premiére saying I thought Mulder and the series should be treated with more respect. I didn't know then what I know now, and what I know is that Mulder makes a hell of a diference. See, I'm a scullyst and I missed Mulder during this 8 season (wich I'm watching through Real Media files) as I never thought I would. It's not about hatting Dogget, he makes no difference, it's about The X-Files being Mulder AND Scully. It's about a great tv series, that could be reminded forever as perfect if it had had a descent finale. Now, though it will always be the best for me and, I believe, most of you, The X-Files will be reminded as a great tv series whose creator lost it's way after 5 terrific seasons. I know there were some great episodes in this season so far, the last "This is not happening" is something to be in my top ten mitharc episodes, but as a whole the 8 season wasn't big thing, as neither the 6 and 7th. But at least those had Scully AND Mulder... And there will probably be a 9th season, God help us!!! Clarisse |

Your Comments: | I am a late comer to the X Files unfortunately. I did not start watching until the 5th season and for this reason I feel the change very hard. I still watch aany old episodes now as if they were new, which theyare to me and knowing Mulder i sleaving is bery unsettling. I wish David Duchovny the very best in his career and personal life and if I could find the words to say I would thank him for the phenomenal effort he has put into Fox Mulder. He is very good at what he does and I will miss him. Maybe a change is what is needed, especially if David wishes to move on in other areas and I know he will be good (very good) at anything he does but just thinking his characte will be forgotten fills me with unspeakable sadness. Mulder deserves better. David definately deserves betterand so do his fans. I have heard that the new man is a New Zealander. maybe true and maybe not. If however it it true I would like to point oit as aNew Zealander myself that masculine is not what New Zealand males are. I could think of other adjectives but won't at this time. Continue your work in support of Mulder and I will support you if I can |

Your Comments: | I have been watching season 8 with a growing sense of being "robbed". I had read that Mulder would only appear in about half the episodes, and I had resolved myself to that sad fact. However, as the season has progressed, I have been apalled at what is considered an "appearance" in an episode. A few grisly moments of our beloved on an alien torture table, a ghostly image in a dark room, a flashback... This is not an appearance! This is a tease! I watched the Mulder-less episodes in hopes of seeing some shippy moments as Scully wrestled with her loss and perhaps realized and admitted her love. Heck, she's barely mentioed him! Doggett's okay, I don't hate him, but he's DEFINITELY no Fox Mulder. If anyone wants my opinion, Mulder's 3rd wish in Je Souhaite was for Scully to regain her fertility. And I believe they did "the naked pretzel" in the beginning of "All Things". I haven't quite worked it all out, but I am connectiong Mulder and the black oil, Gibson Praise, Scully's baby, and the plot to scare her into thinking she's carrying an alien (perhaps to scare her into ending the pregnancy, maybe her baby will be something more than human and very special in fighting the future?)Anyway, I've had my say. Love to debate with anyone with better ideas. I miss Mulder!!! No Season 9! Erin |

Your Comments: | The X-files are finished without Mulder! The entire show centers around his quest, his dedication to researching the paranormalfueled by his belief, his faith in the existence of things unseen. If the actor, David Duchovny, who I know has the greatest admiration for the character of Mulder, is ready to move on, then so is the show (and it seems, hence, so is Mulder). I simply will not watch the show, (and believe it is not likely to survive) with just the character of Scully (who is now a believer, but not a natural like Mulder), a skeptic, and Doggett et. al (all readily naysayers and non-believers who do not seem interested in developing open minds. So, for me, under these circumstances, the show would be over. I am in full support of continuing Mulder and Scully's story in some other capacity...like a couple of feature films like Fight the Future. If there is any way we can campaign for this, let me know. Most sincerely, La Belle Dominique |

Your Comments: | Ok, ok, Chris, it’s been very funny... Now, stop this joke and give the show the closure that we all deserve. I know you’re not a stupid person... And I know that you know we all hate Doggett and all that doggett/scully chemistry crap (By the way, there is absolutely ZERO chemistry between them). Enough is enough. Don’t make me angry... you won’t like me angry. Why didn’t HR or Millennium succeeded? ~HE~ was not on them. David completes The X Files. Without him, it’s just a bunch of garbage that Gillian Anderson can’t deal with. (yeah, you’ve gotta accept it... she can’t deal with it alone, and the series is... well, it’s going to hell with her awful performance). I DO NOT love The X Files. I love Mulder. You try to replace him (and this time, try a little harder... Robert Patrick wasn’t born to be in a show such as XF) and I’ll walk away from you and all those supporting actors such as GA, RP, MP. You’ve killed Mulder several times... haven’t you get enough yet? Aren’t you tired or let’s say SICK of that same crap over and over again? You don’t want the series to end because your other projects didn’t work out. I’m sorry, but paying back on The X Files isn’t the answer. Get over it, before it’s over. |

Your Comments: | I would just like to say that i hate what has happened to the show. Mulder and Scully have been the anchor of the show, what has kept it meaningful ever since the beginnning. their chemistry was very important to the impact of the show, and with that gone, its always going to have the feeling of something missing from it for me. I cried when i saw mulder lying in that field and doggett saying 'its too late'. i dont know what will happen to the show after this, but i know that without the Mulder/Scully partnership it will never be the same...and no one likes change. |

Mulder's mother...why was she killed and by whom? I have all eps and the DVD colections and some on Laser...bonded with the show...we need to keep up the pressure to make 1013 do what is right and properly complete the Mulder/Scully storyline. I, for one, will never watch a Dogget/"Gish" storyline...all Carter is doing is recreating another X-Files w/new characters at the expense of "us"...the fans who watched...Carter thinks we will watch anything...not true here...no Mulder/Scully...NO X-Files!!!!!! |

Your Comments: | "The X-Files" began with Mulder and his quest for the truth. This season's episodes, while good, are a shadow of former seasons'. How can life just simply go on without Mulder, or even any mention of him? He is the X-Files; without him, the X-Files would not have been discovered or investigated. If there is to be a ninth season, and it is to be without Mulder, I doubt I will watch. This has been my favorite show (and obsession) for eight years, but without Mulder it loses its focus. |

Your Comments: | The X-files would be nothing without Mulder - he's the main character for God's sake. There are all these fans saying that Scully is just as important as Mulder, but that's simply not true. They are equal as characters, but Mulder is more important to the plot of the show - his character is the only reason there was a show in the first place! I know that Chris Carter probably won't be reading this - and even if he did, he probably wouldn't even care. But please, PLEASE, I want Mulder's character to be resolved. I don't see why it has to be so difficult. |

Your Comments: | My heart truly aches for my poor Mulder. DD breathed life into a rather odd character and gave him the passion, the drive, the heart and the humor that Only David could. I didnt start watching XF's until last year and since then I have seen Every SINGLE ep except "all things" :(. In every single ep Mulder's dynamism is so ethereal that I found it hard to choke down Dogface's ill attempt at showing Mulder up. I am a TV and movie freak and I have yet to see any other actor use body language, eye conatct, and proximity the way DD does and it is so obviously lacking this season with the intro of RP. I don't know what the actors (GA &RP) mean when they say chemistry-- their interaction, quite frankly, looks forced and cold. I find myself cryng at the loss of what was once a great show, and crossing my fingers for the hope of a happy ending. Chris Carter is not unlike the majority of those in Hollywood. THey figure that the AMerican public is addlepaited and classicly conditioned to accept whatever is dished out and those who chose to voice a concern are labled as extremists. Maybe we don't like to be ripped off.. Its like buying a lemon for a car. We have made CC and Fox very wealthy with our support, the least we deserve is a bit of respect for our intelligence. CC is walking on thin ice and eventually he will fall thru.. remember "HARSH REALM< and MILLENIUM" he is going to milk the XF cash cow for all that he can (not unlike the corrupt preachers that have been the plot for some eps) and will fall out of the limelight and will be remembered as the guy who wrote the XF and then screwed the nation. Good luck CC - you aren't as smart as you think you are.. It is those, that are unwillinging to listen or learn from anyone else, that are truly the ignorant. |

Your Comments: | Hi, I just read an article at the L.A. Times site regarding the X-Files and the Mulder character (where I found this link to your site). I'm amazed at how full of himself Carter is in his attitude toward the complaints regarding Mulder's absence from the show. For some apparently incomprehensible reason only known to himself and other aliens, he appears to believe there is but a handful of fanatical fans that are complaining - and that these FANatics are not in the majority. Carter says, "There's a very vocal group of people on the Internet, that's a very small group of people. There are certain rabid campaigns afoot--I try to take everything with a grain of salt," Someone wake this self-absorbed fool! Who does he think established the popularity of the show in the first place?!?! Change the sign on his door to 'Mr. Clueless' and send me a picture. Becuase of the lack of decent programming on TV and the quality of the X-Files, the show used to be one of 3-4 we would make a real effort to see. Now we may average about 20% of the reruns and about 50% of the new episodes compared to 50% ofr the reruns and 100% of the new episodes. Even with our now varied viewing it is PAINFULLY obvious that the show just isn't the same without Mulder there every week - it's something we comment on after EVERY one of the new episodes. They have no bite, no attitude - NONE of the chemistry. It has had a decisive effect on our viewing of the show. It's the difference between making a real effort to see the show and maybe catching it if we happen to have the TV turned on. I think it's sad when the creator of such a TV landmark starts to gag on his own BS. It's obvious the years of X-Files success has gone to his head. Either he no longer cares to continue with what makes the show successful, or there is more going on behind the scenes than what we're being led to believe. His comments in the article are mainly transparent and half-hearted enthusiasm for a show that just isn't what it used to be. Apparently he thinks morphing the show into some type of mutated offspring will save the viewership. He obviously wants to believe, but we're not falling for it. |

Your Comments: | I'd like to add one more comment. Last week I watched XF for the first time all season. I barely watched it last season. I used to look forward to XF on Sundays. Now I look forward to "The Sopranos" and "Queer As Folk." That disappoints me. XF was such a terrific concept. If only, as I'd mentioned, Carter had taken a cue from "Star Trek" and ended XF before he started running out of ideas (and Duchovny, long tired of XF, finally put his foot down). |

Your Comments: | I found this site thru the article in today's "L.A. Times" Calendar section. One thing I must say to Chris Carter: Who on Earth do you think you're trying to kid? "Mulder's absence added new energy to the show, blah blah blah." If that's not marketing claptrap and spin control, I don't know what is. And guess what? Everyone with half a brain sees right through it, Mr. Carter. What an incredibly arrogant man! "I loved reading the fan's comments on the Internet, until those fans started to disagree with me." That's not a direct quote, but it is basically what he was saying. If Carter had any integrity, if he truly cared about his creative vision more than he cared about making $$$, he would have taken a cue from "Star Trek" and ended this series two years ago--before it got old and stale. At the very least he should have planned to end it this season. I've a feeling Duchovny would have agreed to come back for the entire season IF he'd been assured that this would be the finale. Mr. Carter, you've already made millions off this series. It would not hurt you at all to do the right thing and end this show with this season's finale. Mr. Duchovny has repeatedly expressed that he is tired of doing XF, and XF is no longer XF without Duchovny. |

I'm not on the internet much but wanted to show my support after seeing you in the LA Times. I watched last week for the second time this season and it was so unbelievalbe to this show (and I'm a TV plot rider) I never did figure out what the episode was about or why Mulder was in the elevator-so I turned it off. Your Comments: | The Times article mentioned that the ratings are up this season. No wonder: people are tuning in to see if there is anything about Mulder. It doesn't mean that they like the show. The dynamic between Mulder and Scully is key to the show. Even more important is that Mulder IS the X-Files. Scully cannot stand alone. She doesn't have the intuitive ability to see they way Mulder sees. Mulder gives insight, intuition, knowledge and information to each X-Files event. None of the other characters has his wealth of knowledge or his passion about the subject. Without Mulder, this is just an ordinary show. The Mulder character is unique, and David Duchovny's portrayal makes the character even more dynamic. Scully can't figure it out alone, and Doggett, while a strong and sympathetic character, does not have the ingredients to replace Mulder. If there is no Mulder, there is no X-Files. I am sorely disappointed that he is not involved this season. The flashbacks don't cut it. I sincerely hope he is coming back. |

Your Comments: | Chris Carter said in a recent on-line LA Times interview that he tries "to take everything with a grain of salt". Apparently that's how he tries to take his own history of the X Files as well and his own statements about it.
This season was supposed to be about the search for Mulder. "Mulder was supposed to be the "absent center". The only shows in which there was any actual searching going on were the Season Premiere and the follow up. There was a recent episode that dealt with Mulder's dissapearance but it wasn't to "search" for him, it was more to show why he possibly dissapeared. This is part of the history CC is taking with a grain of salt. He has suddenly decide to make Mulder have been ill and dieing. We got no inkling of that last year but he was supposedly in great pain the whole time. No matter that the Mulder we got seemed more at ease and happy he's been since the episode Closure. Closure, in and of itself was a cop out as well. Never mind that in Season 2 we were, along with Mulder, told that Samantha was alive and did that make us happy? Well, yes it did. But then we find out in season 7 she had been dead only a few months after her abduction. Whatever.
But let's get back to the dieing thing. |

Your Comments: | Hey you guys made the paper!! That is great. I just wanted to come and show my support and say that: I have ••»RELIGIOUSLY«•• watched the show every Sunday evening. I have fallen in love with not only Mulder, but Scully as well. The chemistry that once lite the screen. Season eight is not what I consider one of the best... but it is all we have right now. I will NEVER stop watching the show. For as much as I want Mulder to return, I can't stop watching. Every week I tune in for the slightest Mulder mention, the slighest tear to be shed (by Scully of course). I respect DD's descion to leave the show, but one fact cannot be ignored.... MULDER IS THE X-FILES. Along with Scully of course. But Mulder without Scully, or Scully without Mulder just isn't the X-Files. If CC is going to go on with a 9th season, with little GA and no DD, I think he should retire the title The X-Files. Because it wouldn't be The X-Files. YOu know, like when a famous sports star dies, they retire that number. In this case, when GA and DD are gone, the show will DIE in the hearts of many X-PHILES. I will deeply miss. I will miss the subltle flirtations, the Mulder "hand touch" on the small of Scully's back. I will miss the ever-famous "Forehead thing". I will miss the intriguing story lines. I will miss Mulder's wit. I will miss the passion. I will miss the despair, the love, the hate, and the confusion, felt by the characters. I will miss the horror. I will miss Everything under the X-Files sun. BUt most of all.... I will miss: ..··••ºº THE MULDER AND SCULLY INTERACTION ºº••··.. No other characters on television have a relationship like Mulder and Scully do. They are passionate, and beautiful people. They are this couple (in a matter of words) that is based on a mutually deep love and respect for one another. They are all eachother has. They have both seen death, felt death, avoided death. They DESERVE each other. So anyway, I pledge my support. I want Mulder and Scully to go out with dignity. The X-Files is not the X-Files without Mulder and SCully. Maybe the Y-Files (like "y" me)... but definatly not the X-Files. Thanks for letting me vent!! Email me! Megan aka allthingsx |

Your Comments: | David, You are a great actor and I have enjoyed watching you on the xfiles with GA. I just dont think I would be able to watch the XFiless without you in it in some capacity. How about you and GA come back next year for half the episodes. You could spend the year working underground for the Well Manicured Man. I think it would be an excellent plot line that would be very dynamic. Imagine Mulder and Scully working for an Alli that was once an enemy..The hairs stand up on my arm just thinking about it. Godd luck with your new movie!! |

Your Comments: | I have been disappointed with Mulder as the "absent center." In a show that I have watched for 7+ years, there is blatant disregard for a character that I and other fans have grown to appreciate and follow. But now, with plot lines askewed and "oh, this was happening and you didn't know it" storylines, it seems a betrayal to the series. Scully should be looking for Mulder, or talking about Mulder, not putting his nameplate away in a desk drawer, and not she or Doggett muttering his name until February sweeps. I hope that the Mulder/Scully dynamic is at least resolved, and treated with the respect that he deserves. |

Your Comments: | I love Mulder! I don't want any Agent Dogget! I just want Mulder! I can understand that David wants more time for his family but I don't want any other Agent at Scullys side! The two Agents are together for nearly 8 years and now where is something like love between them, there comes Agent Dogget at Scullys side. Please David i want you back! |

Your Comments: | I surely hope that everyone now recognizes the fact that without DD there is no XF. The ratings have now proven that better than all the guestbook entries and forum posts ever could. No one in their right mind could dispute that Mulder is the reason for the X-Files and without him and his quest and DD and his sense of humor the XF are dead. Let's give M & S the ending they deserve and forge ahead to the next movie. |

Your Comments: | I am so upset that David Duchovny left the show. I love Gillian Anderson and the characted that she USED to play. But w/o David to back her up, Gillian's character is sad and completely different than what turned me on to her in the first place. She used to be a strong female roll model. Now she's a joke. The show has been an utter disappointment. I started watching the new season not expecting much. But this is rediculous. The script has just gotten weaker and weaker. I have nothing against Robert Patrick's character, Dogget. But the whole show was about Mulder's passion for The X Files. Why did this guy join? And I thought they are supposed to be searching for Mulder because of that whole thing when the show is opening when Mulder is falling into the eye. But they looked for him for like what? A whole episode? After working with Mulder for 7 years you think Scully and Skinner would be more interested in looking for him than in some cliched monsters that have been done before. I don't know why the kept it going. They should of ended it and then just made a movie where they find Mulder or something. Maybe Chris is just writing because he's not out of his contract yet. This show could have went down a legend, and now it's going to go down a joke. Losing David Duchovny was FOX's biggest mistake and will ultimately cost them a very highly ranking show. Hail Mulder! |

Your Comments: | I love this show and will always love it. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are my all time favorite actors. I think it's a shame that FOX ripped David off of all of that money that he rightfully earned. And that that is a good reason to leave that company and utterly the show. I do still watch the show, but it's just not the same as it was for me when David was on. He pretty much was the whole show. Not that I don't like Robert Patrick...but the whole show has changed. Now Scully is the Mulder of the show. And Doggit is the way Scully used to be. And then they are going to get some new person on the show which will probably destroy the whole thing. Maybe I just don't like change...but The X Files will never be the same after David's departure from the show. IMO |
