Thanks so much to Candice for writing up this about her encounter with Daniel in New York City back in November 2001. We hope you enjoy reading it!
Meeting Daniel in NYC
I didn't know how to actually get tickets to be in the TRL audience, so my only hope was to attempt to catch their attention from Times Square and get invited up. So I had to come up with something...different. So I decided to go wearing only my Harry Potter towel (it was the only piece of HP merchandise I had) and make a sign that said, "Nothing comes between me and Harry Potter!" I thought that was clever and it worked! I was standing out there chatting with some other HP fans and all of the sudden I looked up and saw Daniel and Carson at the window. I shrieked and that's when one of the crew from the show came up and took me up to the studio.
Basically I was in complete shock when I got up into the studio (not to mention half-frozen to death...) Carson called me over and introduced me to Daniel and I got to shake his adorable little hand. For those of you who didn't see the show, he was wearing that yellow shirt with the black stripe across the front. He said, "Nice to meet you," and I was like, "Nice to meet you!" Carson asked me why I did this and I said something lame like, "Because I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and I'm a huge Daniel Radcliffe fan!" Carson asked me if I was going to see the movie that weekend and I said I wanted to to but I didn't have my tickets yet. He said, "I'm sure we can work something out..." (BTW, they never gave me the tickets.) And then I got to shake Daniel's hand again and that was it. They showed me to my seat and I didn't get to talk to Daniel any more. :( During the commercial break they did this little thing where Daniel said, "Hello, I'm Daniel Radcliffe and your'e watching TRL." and then the audience would all cheer and clap and such. They did it twice. It was really cute. And then they thanked him and ushered him away.
That pretty much sums that up. I was very mad at myself for not being more charming and such. But apparently I did make something of an impression, because he did mention me on the Letterman show. (But I didn't find that out until it aired that night.)
After TRL I walked up to the Ed Sullivan theater and waited for him to come out of Letterman (I had put some clothes on, BTW). A photographer standing near me overheard the TRL story. So when Daniel came out (he was very sweet trying to sign everyone's autograph...) the photographer said, "Hey! We have the Towel Girl from TRL here!" to get Daniel's attention. Some woman with Daniel said, "Ooh, it is her!" and nudged Daniel and he looked up and smiled. But sadly, I didn't get to talk to him or anything. He was whisked away into a limo and that was that. But I was still excited to see him again. :)
Everyone's been asking my impressions of Daniel. I was most impressed by how small he is! In all the pictures he looks so mature wearing a tie and sweater and such, but when he's casually dressed, he just looks small. :) That's the best insight I can offer, because as I mentioned, I was pretty much in shock (understandably.)
I think that pretty much sums everything up! (Sorry it was so long.) I'm enclosing an animated picture someone made for me with screencaps from the show. If it works, it should flash a few shots of Daniel and me.
