I’m sure there are many out there who remember the days when Andy - aka SLOT drummer TinHed - was shuffling round in Pampers…but those days are long gone (we hope). Because Monday 24th is his 21st birthday, and he decided to celebrate in style at ye locale Phoenix on Friday night!
First band were Macbeth: pieces collected together from the remnants of Twinfast, Neco and Flock. I’ve seen them once before at their debut gig, and I have to say I wasn’t all that impressed. However, try, try, try again and all that, because this time they played quite a sound set. Give them a few more weeks and they’ll be supreme in their punk rock godliness – they’re halfway there! Plus they use keyboard, which is always a bonus….
Of course, the night would not be complete without everyone’s favourite Plymouthian fools….SLOT. Serious lack of talent, I don’t think - Seriously Loads, more like. They played a tight, energetic set, despite being really rather slaughtered, and of course played the soon to be legendary ‘Punk Rock Pirates’…. “ARGH!”
Then came the third band of the night, Fraternity. I hadn’t seen them play yet this year seeing as it was only their 2nd gig since the re-launch here in Plymouth. They played an awesome set, and my personal favourite song of theirs ‘In A Different Place’ taken from their debut EP ‘In Our Time’ blew me away. And by the looks of the crowd they were enjoying it too, and there was plenty of singing along! Sadly the set was cut short, but not even that could dampen everyone's view of their undeniable talent.
Now this night is a special one because not just because Andy’s all grown up, but also because pop punk giants (giants in height and reputation) Two Day Rule have once again decided to grace us with their presence! This band are a strange one and I almost wonder whether they have mastered the art of mind control, their infectious and get-drunk-and-dance-like-an-epileptic-gorilla style songs just can’t help but make you a fan no matter what your other musical tastes are. You can’t get those damn songs out of your head! Of course the fact that they have a female vocalist (and a pretty one at that) did nothing but to help entice the male audience into dancing like lunatics and Andrea Kenny purred and growled impressively throughout their set, aided by Neil Murray’s awesome voice. All this fine vocal intercourse was backed up brilliantly by Craig’s bass lines…which of course sounded 10 times better through his enormous Ampeg amp and the dazzling octopus like figure that was Matt on the Drums who made me wish I was a drummer instead of a guitarist. Now to tell the truth I only found out I was writing this review after the gig had happened so I didn’t think to memorise the set they played (plus I was a lil bit wrecked). Never the less I did notice some of them including After dark and Phoning In as well as the welcome return of my personal favourite…Nothing Serious. It’s refreshing to hear a band with such a varied set as theirs, especially one that still maintains quality as high as this throughout. Anyway I think I am rambling so I shall wrap up this little rant. Although I sound like a TOTAL brown nose in this review I think I can be excused considering the band in question (plus Neil let me stay on his floor). If you still think I am sucking up then just go to one of this bands shows and then you try and write a review…it’ll be much like this…but obviously not as well written…heh.
Written by Luce Williams, plus Becka Adams and Mike Green when it was decided that Luce was too drunk and AWOL to remember how half the bands played....
